Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled sweeping plans to upgrade Umm Suqeim Street, aiming to improve traffic capacity, reduce travel times, and enhance community connectivity. The works span a 20-kilometer stretch from Jumeirah Street to Al Qudra Road and will reshape one of Dubai’s most vital transport corridors.
To support key residential and business hubs across the city, Dubai is strategically positioning this project as its population rapidly grows and urban mobility demands intensify.
In line with our efforts to accelerate the development of road infrastructure and expand traffic capacity across #Dubai, #RTA is announcing an integrated urban project to upgrade Umm Suqeim Street, from its intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road.

Designed to Ease Congestion and Improve Flow
At the heart of the Umm Suqeim Street upgrade is a targeted push to streamline traffic movement and relieve daily congestion. Once completed, the upgraded route will accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. This project will reduce travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road from 20 minutes to just six minutes during peak hours.
Four new bridges and three tunnels, spanning over four kilometres, will eliminate bottlenecks at key junctions and intersections.
Major Intersection Improvements Across the Corridor
The RTA’s upgrade focuses on six critical intersections:
- Jumeirah Street
- Al Wasl Street
- Sheikh Zayed Road
- First Al Khail Street
- Al Asayel Street
- Al Khail Road
Notably, two major bridges will be built at the Sheikh Zayed Road interchange to prevent traffic overlap. Meanwhile, a new tunnel with dual lanes in each direction will ease congestion at the Jumeirah Street intersection, alongside a surface-level junction. A second tunnel will channel traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road through to Al Wasl Street.
The project team will widen roads between First Al Khail Street and Al Asayel Street, adding an extra lane in each direction and increasing capacity to four lanes each way.
Public Transport and Community Access
Beyond roads and bridges, the upgrade introduces pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and a commitment to greener transport. The project includes new walkways, a dedicated cycling track, and landscaped urban areas designed to enhance liveability and encourage more active lifestyles.
A direct pedestrian connection between the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station and surrounding residential zones will make it easier for more people to access the Dubai Metro—further supporting the emirate’s sustainability goals and reducing car dependency.
Part of a Larger Vision for Dubai’s Roads
This project is one component of a broader master plan to elevate road networks across key districts in Dubai. Future phases will target improvements to Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street, and Al Safa Street. Together, these upgrades are tailored to serve over two million residents in areas including Al Barsha, Al Quoz, Umm Suqeim, and Al Sufouh.
The enhanced Umm Suqeim to Al Qudra corridor is set to become a critical link between residential zones, business areas, and Dubai’s main arterial highways—including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.
Project Nears Completion as Work Passes 70% Mark
Originally launched in early 2024, the Umm Suqeim Street upgrade is progressing rapidly, with 70% of the works already completed. The project team plans to complete the project before the end of this year, providing thousands of daily commuters with a faster, safer, and more efficient route.
As Dubai continues to evolve as a global city, investments like this reflect the emirate’s commitment to building future-ready infrastructure that keeps pace with its dynamic growth.
