Dubai to Launch Self-Driving Taxi Trials in 2025

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority teams up with Uber and WeRide to test autonomous taxis, bringing the city closer to its goal of 25% driverless transport by 2030.

Dubai is accelerating its journey toward a driverless future. In a major move to redefine urban mobility, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a partnership with Uber and WeRide to launch self-driving taxi trials in 2025. The agreement supports the city’s long-term vision of becoming a global leader in smart transport.

The initiative places Dubai at the forefront of autonomous innovation in the region and reinforces the emirate’s goal of making 25% of all journeys driverless by 2030.

Smart Mobility, Real-World Impact

Dubai’s rapid growth has led to increasing pressure on its transport infrastructure. The need for sustainable, efficient, and tech-forward solutions has never been more urgent. With this pilot, the RTA aims to reduce traffic accidents, lower emissions, and optimise transport flows.

Self-driving taxis are expected to improve road safety, reduce operational costs, and enhance accessibility, particularly in high-demand urban areas.

Inside the Partnership: Uber x WeRide x RTA

This ambitious rollout is the result of a three-way collaboration:

  • Uber will provide its advanced ride-hailing technology, connecting users to the autonomous taxi network.
  • WeRide, a global pioneer in Level 4 autonomous driving, will supply and manage the vehicles during the pilot phase.
  • RTA will oversee safety, regulation, and operational integration across the city.

The partnership is seen as a strategic alignment between tech innovators and Dubai’s forward-looking transport vision.

When and Where Will It Start?

While specific launch zones have not been disclosed, the initial phase will likely focus on high-traffic areas such as Downtown Dubai, Business Bay, and Dubai Marina. The pilot will begin in late 2025, with public participation expected during controlled testing.

The vehicles will operate within clearly defined routes and undergo rigorous safety checks before wider adoption.

self-driving taxi: Need for residents

For Dubai residents, the benefits of autonomous taxis extend beyond novelty. These vehicles can help:

  • Reduce commute times during peak hours
  • Lower the number of accidents caused by human error
  • Offer more reliable first- and last-mile transport options
  • Promote cleaner, greener transportation methods

The RTA has assured that all vehicles will undergo extensive real-world testing, ensuring safety and reliability remain top priorities.

Dubai’s Roadmap to a Driverless Future

The launch of this pilot aligns with broader efforts under the Dubai Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy. Alongside self-driving taxis, the city is also exploring:

  • Autonomous flying taxis
  • AI-powered metro operations
  • Electric and hybrid vehicle adoption
  • Smart traffic management systems

The vision is to make Dubai a global model for smart, safe, and sustainable transport systems.

A Tech-Driven Leap for the UAE

Dubai’s entry into autonomous mobility places it in the same league as major innovation hubs like San Francisco, Shenzhen, and Singapore. By integrating ride-hailing platforms with cutting-edge AI and robotics, the emirate continues to set the benchmark for urban innovation in the Middle East.

The next step

Residents can look forward to experiencing a new form of transport that’s intelligent, efficient, and contactless. Booking a ride could soon be as easy as tapping your phone—only this time, the car will arrive without a driver.

The RTA will gradually scale the project based on performance, feedback, and evolving road conditions, with a view to full commercial operations in the years ahead.

Dubai’s partnership with Uber and WeRide marks a bold chapter in its urban transport narrative. With trials set to begin in 2025, the city is signalling its readiness to embrace the next era of smart mobility.
