Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed traffic upgrades at 10 key school-zone locations, benefitting 27 schools across the emirate. The works, carried out during the summer of 2025, were designed to improve safety, ease traffic bottlenecks, and create a smoother experience for parents, students, and staff as the new academic year begins.
Safer Routes for School Communities
The upgrades targeted areas that typically experience heavy congestion during drop-off and pick-up times. Among the locations were Al Warqa, Al Safa, Al Barsha, Al Garhoud, Al Mizhar, and Al Qusais. These neighbourhoods are home to some of Dubai’s largest educational institutions, where morning and afternoon rush hours often strain local roads.
The RTA widened key roads, added new entrances and exits, and installed pedestrian signals to make crossings safer for students. Authorities introduced traffic-calming measures to reduce speeding near school gates.
Major Parking Improvements
Parking availability has long been one of the biggest concerns for parents around busy schools. As part of this project, the RTA expanded parking capacity across several locations, with increases of up to 90 per cent in some zones. This expansion provides more organised spaces for parents and school buses, helping to reduce the double-parking and roadside stops that previously slowed down traffic.
By adding extra parking bays for staff and parents in areas such as Al Mizhar and Al Barsha, the RTA has created a more structured flow that supports both convenience and safety.
Faster Traffic Flow
The improvements have already translated into noticeable results. According to RTA’s assessments, traffic flow in school zones has improved by between 25 and 40 per cent, cutting down waiting times and easing pressure on surrounding roads.
For parents and bus operators, this means quicker drop-offs and smoother dispersal after school hours—an important step in reducing daily commuting stress.
Next Phase of Improvements
The summer programme forms part of a wider RTA initiative to make school zones safer and more efficient. Further upgrades are planned in neighbourhoods including Umm Al Sheif, Al Barsha South, and additional parts of Al Warqa. These projects are being implemented in coordination with Dubai Police to ensure they support road safety strategies citywide.
How Parents and Drivers Can Help
The RTA is urging school communities to use the upgraded facilities responsibly. Parents should use designated pick-up and drop-off areas, and drivers must avoid parking in restricted zones like emergency spaces or spots reserved for people of determination. Observing speed limits, respecting pedestrian crossings, and following school bus signals remain critical to keeping school zones safe.
Building a Safer Future
These upgrades reflect Dubai’s ongoing investment in infrastructure that supports education and family life. By targeting school zones, the RTA improves child safety and eases daily routines for families.
