Dubai has taken a significant step in improving its road infrastructure, cutting travel times by up to 60% in key locations. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) implemented several enhancements in 2024, optimizing traffic movement across 50 major areas. These upgrades have not only reduced congestion but also increased road capacity by 20%, making commuting more seamless for residents and visitors.

Key Road Expansions and Upgrades
Al Rebat Street Sees Major Improvement
One of the biggest enhancements was made to Exit 55 leading to Al Rebat Street. The extension of this exit by 600 meters, along with an increase in lanes from two to three, has significantly improved traffic flow. This upgrade has expanded the road’s capacity to accommodate 4,500 vehicles per hour, cutting travel time from 10 minutes to just four.
Better Access to Nad Al Sheba
To ease congestion in Nad Al Sheba, the RTA introduced a new entry and exit for vehicles arriving from Meydan Street. Additionally, the intersection of Latifa Bint Hamdan Street with Nad Al Sheba Street was converted into a roundabout. These enhancements have led to a 60% reduction in travel time, making access to the area much more efficient.
Improved Traffic Flow Around Schools
The RTA carried out eight traffic improvement projects in 2024, benefiting over 37 schools across Dubai. These included widening roads around school zones, increasing parking spaces, and enhancing entry and exit points. These efforts have improved peak-hour traffic flow by 20%, making school drop-offs and pick-ups safer and more efficient.
Schools that benefited from these upgrades include Kings’ School on Umm Suqeim Street, The International School of Choueifat – Dubai, and Dubai College on Hessa Street, among others.
Intelligent Traffic Systems Expanding
Dubai is expanding its Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) to enhance road management and real-time monitoring. By 2026, ITS coverage will extend to 100% of the city’s main roads, up from the current 60%. This initiative includes installing more traffic cameras, incident detection devices, and Variable Message Signs (VMS) to provide real-time updates on road conditions.
New Developments in Public Transport
Dubai Metro Blue Line Project
In a major push towards better public transport, the RTA has awarded a contract for the construction of the Dubai Metro Blue Line. Spanning 30 kilometers with 14 stations, this metro expansion will significantly improve connectivity and ease congestion on major roads.
Hessa Street Bridge Opens for Faster Commute
The recently opened two-lane bridge on Hessa Street, linking it with Al Khail Road, has drastically cut travel times in one of the busiest traffic zones. A trip that used to take 15 minutes now takes just three, providing significant relief to daily commuters.
What’s Next? Plans for 2025
The RTA is set to roll out over 75 new traffic improvements in 2025. These will include:
- Expanding and upgrading major intersections
- Constructing new entry and exit points in residential and commercial areas
- Implementing rapid traffic solutions in school zones
These efforts aim to further enhance Dubai’s position as a global leader in smart infrastructure and urban mobility.
Dubai’s continuous investment in road infrastructure is making commuting faster, safer, and more efficient. With major upgrades completed and more on the way, residents can expect smoother travel experiences across the city.
