Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths is confident that the Emirate’s main airport will handle 100 million passengers annually by 2027. This ambitious goal comes as the global aviation industry is expected to resolve current aircraft supply chain issues by the end of 2026.
Steady Growth Despite Challenges
The aviation industry faced significant setbacks during the pandemic, with many airlines reducing their fleets. Supply chain problems for aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing have also delayed deliveries. Despite these hurdles, Griffiths anticipates steady growth in the coming years. “We expect these issues to be resolved by late 2026 or early 2027,” he said, predicting a surge in passenger numbers once the additional aircraft are delivered.
Record Passenger Numbers in 2024
Dubai International Airport (DXB) reported a record 44.9 million passengers in the first half of 2024, an 8% increase from last year. Experts expect this upward trend to continue, forecasting 91.8 million passengers by the end of the year, surpassing the previous record of 89.1 million set in 2018. Home carriers Emirates and flydubai are driving this growth through their expansion plans, with both placing significant orders for new aircraft.
Expanding Capacity at DWC
As DXB nears its capacity, plans are underway to move some passenger traffic to the existing terminal at Dubai World Central (DWC) in Dubai South. DWC currently has a capacity of 30 million passengers, which will help alleviate the pressure on DXB and support future growth. Experts are finalizing detailed designs for a new $35 billion terminal at DWC, focusing on improving customer service and operational efficiency.
Infrastructure Upgrades
Dubai Airports is investing in several refurbishment projects at DXB. These include expanding Terminal 2 and refreshing the Arrivals terminal at Terminal 1. Airports are introducing new technologies to make the passenger experience smoother, such as advanced baggage screening systems that let travelers keep laptops and liquids in their bags during security checks.
Regional Market Performance
In the first half of 2024, passenger traffic grew significantly from key regions such as East Asia (16.3%), the GCC (15.4%), and Eastern Europe (14.3%). India, Saudi Arabia, and the UK remain the most popular destinations, reinforcing DXB’s role as a major global hub.
Future Outlook
Despite regional geopolitical challenges, Dubai Airports remains resilient, redirecting traffic to growth markets and maintaining strong passenger numbers. These ongoing investments and strategic planning highlight Dubai’s commitment to becoming a leading global aviation hub.
