Dubai continues to raise the bar for public transport. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed the installation of 726 modern bus shelters across key locations in Dubai, marking a significant step towards improving daily commutes for residents and visitors.
This latest upgrade is designed to support over 192 million annual bus riders, while making public transport a more practical and appealing choice across the emirate.
A city-wide upgrade focused on daily commuters
The newly installed bus shelters are spread across high-demand areas, carefully selected based on population density and operational needs.
This isn’t just about adding more stops—it’s about improving how people experience public transport every day. Many of these shelters are connected to 10 or more bus routes, helping reduce waiting times and making journeys more seamless.
For daily commuters in areas like Deira, Bur Dubai, and growing residential zones, this means:
- Easier route access
- Faster connections
- Less time spent waiting in harsh weather
Designed for comfort, even in peak summer
One of the standout features of the new shelters is the focus on comfort—something that truly matters in Dubai’s climate.
Main bus stops now include:
- Air-conditioned waiting areas
- Shaded outdoor seating
- Clear route maps and digital information displays
This makes a noticeable difference, especially during peak summer months when waiting outdoors can be challenging. The addition of cooling systems at high-traffic stops shows how the city is prioritising real, everyday comfort for commuters.
Passengers can now check bus timings, service frequency, and route details directly at the stop, reducing uncertainty and improving travel planning.
Seven types of shelters based on usage
Not all bus stops serve the same number of passengers, and RTA has addressed this by introducing seven different shelter models.
These are categorised based on daily usage:
- Main Stops: More than 750 riders per day
- Secondary Stops: 250–750 riders
- Standard Stops: 100–250 riders
- Pick-up/Drop-off Stops: Fewer than 100 riders
This approach ensures resources are used efficiently while still maintaining quality across all locations. High-traffic stops get premium features, while smaller stops remain functional and accessible.
It’s a practical system that reflects how Dubai plans infrastructure—with precision and future growth in mind.
Supporting sustainability and reducing emissions
This project goes beyond convenience. It also plays a role in Dubai’s long-term sustainability goals.
By making public buses more attractive and accessible, RTA aims to:
- Encourage residents to shift from private cars
- Reduce traffic congestion
- Lower carbon emissions
Improving the overall transport experience is key to changing commuter behaviour. When public transport becomes more reliable and comfortable, more people are willing to use it.
Inclusive design for People of Determination
Another important highlight is accessibility. All new bus shelters are designed in line with the Dubai Universal Design Code, ensuring they are inclusive for everyone.
Features include:
- Dedicated spaces for wheelchair users
- Easy access points
- Clear signage for better navigation
This aligns with Dubai’s “My Community… A City for Everyone” initiative, which aims to create a fully inclusive urban environment.
It’s a reminder that infrastructure in Dubai isn’t just about scale—it’s also about inclusivity and equal access.
With 726 new bus shelters now in place, Dubai is taking another strong step towards building a more efficient, comfortable, and inclusive public transport system.
From air-conditioned waiting areas to smarter route connectivity, the upgrades directly improve daily life for millions of commuters. At the same time, they support the city’s broader goals of sustainability and urban development.
As Dubai continues to grow, projects like this show how infrastructure is evolving to keep pace—thoughtfully and strategically.
