Dubai RTA Completes Business Bay Road Upgrades to Ease Traffic Congestion

Smarter roads, wider lanes, and reorganised intersections aim to ease daily congestion in Dubai’s thriving Business Bay district

As part of its ongoing mission to improve urban mobility, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed a strategic set of road enhancements across the Business Bay area. Known for its high-rise clusters, commercial activity, and constant vehicular flow, Business Bay has long grappled with congestion issues—especially during peak hours.

City planners have implemented these latest upgrades to significantly ease traffic, reduce delays, and improve safety across one of Dubai’s busiest urban corridors.

Key road transformations in Business Bay

The RTA’s newly completed upgrades targeted critical routes connecting Business Bay to major highways such as Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. One of the standout changes involved the conversion of a key road parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road. Previously operating as a two-lane, two-way street, it has now been transformed into a one-way dual carriageway.

This simple yet impactful modification effectively doubled the road’s capacity and helped eliminate traffic overlap points, leading to smoother vehicular movement and reduced risk of collisions.

To support these changes, the authority has also installed new signage and updated road markings, enabling a safer and more intuitive driving experience for road users.

Expanded intersections and smarter right-turn lanes

Addressing the issue of bottlenecks at high-traffic intersections, the RTA added a 100-metre-long storage lane at the junction of Al Mustaqbal Street and Al Khaleej Al Tejari 1 Street. This dedicated lane increases the right-turn capacity toward First Al Khail Street by up to 50 per cent, substantially easing vehicle congestion and cutting down waiting times at the lights.

This upgrade has already begun improving traffic flow in the area, allowing vehicles to turn right more efficiently without blocking through traffic.

Bridge capacity doubled for smoother canal crossings

Another key enhancement was the expansion of the bridge on Al Mustaqbal Street over the canal, a vital corridor for commuters moving towards First Al Khail Street. The entry point to the bridge was widened from one lane to two, effectively doubling its capacity.

This change helps disperse rush-hour traffic more evenly, particularly during the evening commute, reducing the frequent build-up previously experienced along the canal.

Enhanced service roads near residential towers

To improve local traffic management within residential zones, the RTA also reorganised service roads near the cluster of towers along Al Mustaqbal Street. By adding an additional lane to the service road, capacity has been boosted by nearly 50 per cent.

This adjustment plays a crucial role in segregating local traffic from through traffic, thus reducing conflicts and improving the flow of vehicles within the community.

Supporting Business Bay’s rapid growth

These improvements come at a critical time. Business Bay continues to evolve as a hub for commerce, luxury living, and tourism. The growing number of residents and daily visitors has placed mounting pressure on its road network.

The RTA’s latest upgrades boost future growth while keeping the area accessible for residents, workers, and commuters.

In line with Dubai’s long-term mobility strategy

These changes align with the broader vision set out in the city’s urban mobility framework, aimed at enhancing liveability and reducing congestion across key districts. The RTA has also introduced AI-powered traffic systems and is working on metro station expansions to complement road upgrades with smarter transport integration.

As Dubai continues its transformation into a global smart city, infrastructure improvements like these ensure the city stays ahead of demand while improving quality of life for its residents.

A better, safer commute for all

The RTA’s completed upgrades in Business Bay—widened bridges, smarter lanes, and better service roads—show its push for safer, smoother commutes.
