Abu Dhabi mandates 4 hours of Arabic lessons weekly for nursery, KG students

Starting from the 2025–2026 academic year, Abu Dhabi will require all private and educational partnership nurseries and kindergartens to deliver four hours of Arabic lessons each week. Issued by ADEK, this directive supports early Arabic fluency as part of a broader strategy.

Starting in 2026–2027, the policy will expand Arabic instruction to five hours weekly for nursery through KG2.

early Arabic lessons are important

Scientific research drives the introduction of mandatory Arabic lessons in early education. Children absorb languages most effectively during their formative years. However, many students—despite hearing Arabic at home—struggle with fluency and confidence once they enter school.

By making Arabic a daily part of early learning, the policy seeks to bridge the gap between home exposure and formal education, ensuring children build both confidence and connection with the language.

Customised learning paths for native and non-native speakers

Recognising the diversity in Abu Dhabi’s classrooms, the initiative features two parallel learning tracks:

  • For native Arabic speakers: The focus will be on expanding vocabulary, grammar, and cultural fluency.
  • For non-native speakers: Lessons will be tailored to help students develop basic language skills through immersive and engaging techniques.

Teachers will deliver instruction through storytelling, music, games, and hands-on activities to make Arabic interactive, enjoyable, and relevant for young learners.

Parents and schools: A collaborative role in language development

To ensure consistent progress, the new framework promotes strong collaboration between schools and families. Educators will actively guide parents in reinforcing classroom learning at home through themed activities, songs, and reading practices.

Schools, on their part, will be equipped with trained Arabic teachers and modern instructional resources to ensure effective delivery. Educators will actively engage with families, providing regular updates and practical tools to support at-home learning.

Aligning with a nationwide movement to preserve identity

Abu Dhabi’s policy is in line with similar educational reforms being implemented across the UAE:

  • In Dubai, the local education authority has mandated Arabic learning from birth to six years old in private nurseries and early education centres.
  • In Sharjah, all government nurseries now use Arabic as the primary medium of instruction, following directives issued in late 2024.

These initiatives safeguard Arabic as a vital part of identity, culture, and communication for future generations.

Arabic as cultural connection

“This is about giving every child in Abu Dhabi the gift of language, identity, and connection starting from day one,” said a senior ADEK official. Arabic is not simply a subject in the curriculum—it is a bridge to heritage, values, and a deeper sense of belonging.

By fostering early engagement, the initiative nurtures a lasting connection to Arabic in both speech and spirit.

What’s next for schools and families?

With the new academic year approaching, Abu Dhabi’s private nurseries and kindergartens will integrate the updated Arabic curriculum into daily schedules. Teachers will undergo training, and institutions will roll out plans to support the transition.

Parents should introduce basic Arabic at home to support classroom learning.

Abu Dhabi’s mandate for structured Arabic instruction in early education strengthens cultural continuity and language learning in the UAE.
