With the new academic year now underway, traffic patrols were out in full force across Ras Al Khaimah to ease congestion and safeguard school zones. In a unique initiative, RAK Police offered drivers a reduction of four black points on their licences if they pledged to drive responsibly and avoid violations on the first day of school.
The initiative forms part of the Ministry of Interior’s nationwide campaign Accident-Free Day, which seeks to lower accident rates and enhance safety for children during peak school traffic.
A Reward for Responsible Driving
Police officials explained that the scheme is designed not only to reduce violations but also to instil better driving habits among motorists during one of the busiest periods on UAE roads.
Brigadier Ahmed Al Sam Al Naqbi, Director General of Central Operations at Ras Al Khaimah Police, confirmed that detailed field plans were in place to support parents and students during drop-off and pick-up times. He added that patrols were deployed at identified congestion “hot spots” around schools and educational complexes to ensure smoother traffic flow.
Understanding the Black Point System
In the UAE, traffic violations are tracked using a black point system. Offences such as speeding, reckless driving or failing to follow traffic signals add points to a driver’s record. If a motorist reaches 24 points, their licence can be suspended.
The Ras Al Khaimah Police initiative offers motorists a chance to reduce existing points, creating a positive incentive for safe behaviour while reducing risks around schools.
Keeping School Zones Safe

Back-to-school traffic is a major challenge every year, with thousands of vehicles converging on schools during morning and afternoon rush hours. This congestion often increases the risk of accidents, particularly near pedestrian crossings and junctions.
Ras Al Khaimah Police confirmed that teams were on the ground from the early morning to monitor traffic and raise awareness among parents, drivers, and even students about safe practices around schools.
Part of a Wider National Campaign
The Accident-Free Day campaign is being rolled out across all emirates, highlighting the UAE’s unified approach to traffic safety. Alongside enforcement, authorities are using this opportunity to remind drivers that safety is a shared responsibility—especially when children are among road users.
Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah also stepped up their back-to-school traffic measures this week, with increased patrols, rerouted flows, and awareness programmes for parents and students.
Building Long-Term Road Safety Habits
While the four-point reduction is a one-day offer, police authorities emphasised that the aim is to build lasting driving habits that extend beyond the back-to-school period. By rewarding compliance and good behaviour, authorities hope to foster a culture where road safety becomes second nature.
The initiative in Ras Al Khaimah sends a clear message: safe driving not only protects children and parents on the roads but also benefits motorists directly through reduced penalties.
As the UAE continues to prioritise road safety, drivers are reminded that their actions behind the wheel have an immediate impact on community wellbeing.
