Sharjah Cuts Traffic Fatalities by 24% in 2024

Sharjah Police reports a major decline in road deaths as strategic safety campaigns lower traffic fatality rate to 1.76 per 100,000 residents

Sharjah Police has announced a notable 24% reduction in traffic fatalities in 2024 compared to the previous year. This achievement brings the emirate’s road fatality rate down to 1.76 per 100,000 residents—a significant milestone that reflects the effectiveness of Sharjah’s continuous efforts to promote safer roads.

The development aligns with the UAE’s broader vision to enhance public safety through smart governance, active community engagement, and integrated infrastructure development.

Proactive campaigns make a visible impact

The sharp drop in road deaths did not happen by chance. In 2024, Sharjah Police rolled out 12 targeted awareness campaigns focusing on high-risk behaviours such as speeding, distracted driving, improper parking, and jaywalking. These campaigns reached more than 900,000 individuals through both online and on-ground activities.

In parallel, traffic authorities worked on-site at over 270 public events, helping regulate congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow. They also played a critical role in facilitating nearly 2,000 road maintenance projects, creating safer and more efficient transit corridors across the emirate.

A focused effort from police and Sharjah Police

According to Brigadier General Mohammed Alai Al Naqbi, Director of Sharjah Police’s Traffic and Patrols Department, the success was the result of an integrated approach that combined enforcement with education. He highlighted how community involvement, effective policing, and infrastructure collaboration were key in achieving this result.

The campaigns also encouraged behavioural change among motorists and pedestrians, promoting a sense of shared responsibility that is essential for road safety.

Road behaviour remains a top concern

Despite the positive results, officials remain cautious. The main causes of traffic accidents in the emirate continue to be distracted driving, failure to adhere to lane discipline, and pedestrian violations. Police stress the importance of continued vigilance and community cooperation to sustain the momentum.

Sharjah’s success story also serves as a valuable reference point for other emirates, especially Dubai, where rapid urban growth and a high volume of vehicles demand persistent focus on traffic safety.

How Dubai can draw lessons from Sharjah

While Dubai has its own advanced road systems and safety protocols, Sharjah’s campaign-driven results present a replicable model. Collaborative awareness drives, targeted enforcement, and integration with urban planning projects can offer long-term benefits when adopted on a broader scale.

The shared goal across the UAE is to reduce road fatalities while encouraging a culture of responsible driving. As the population continues to grow and urban mobility evolves, these proactive measures become even more critical.

Safety starts with small habits

Residents are encouraged to embrace everyday habits that support safer roads:

  • Avoid mobile phone use while driving
  • Adhere strictly to speed limits
  • Cross roads only at designated areas
  • Wear seatbelts at all times
  • Report reckless driving when witnessed

Such individual steps, when taken collectively, can help protect lives and reduce accidents significantly.

A national vision with local results

Sharjah’s 2024 milestone proves that well-planned road safety campaigns can lead to measurable outcomes. The emirate’s ability to reduce its traffic fatality rate so significantly shows that awareness, enforcement, and community participation remain the pillars of traffic safety success in the UAE.

As other emirates continue to work towards Vision 2030 goals, Sharjah’s achievement serves as both inspiration and a call to action for unified efforts in creating a safer transportation future.
