With the summer heat at its peak, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) is urging residents and outdoor workers to take essential precautions. As heatwaves become more common and intense due to climate change, following these guidelines can help protect your health and safety.
Understanding Heatwaves
Heatwaves occur when temperatures stay significantly higher than normal for several days in a row. High humidity can make it feel even hotter. People at greater risk during these conditions include the elderly, pregnant women, young children, and outdoor workers.

UAE: Essential Safety Tips During Heatwaves
1. Stay Updated with Weather Forecasts
Keep an eye on the weather forecasts to stay informed about high temperatures and heatwave warnings. This helps in planning your activities and taking preventive measures ahead of time.
2. Prepare a First Aid Kit
Make sure your first aid kit has oral rehydration salts, a thermometer, plenty of water bottles, cooling cloths, a fan, or a battery-operated water sprayer. These items are vital for managing heat stress and dehydration.
3. Keep a Heat Stress Guidebook
Have a guidebook handy that explains how to recognize and treat heat stress symptoms. It’s important to be able to identify early signs and act quickly.
4. Record Emergency Contacts
Have contact details for the nearest health center or ambulance service easily accessible. Quick access to emergency services can be crucial in serious situations.
5. Block Out the Sun Indoors
Use shades or curtains to block out sunlight during the hottest parts of the day. Open windows at night to let cooler air flow through your home.
6. Use Cooling Devices
Fans and air conditioners are effective for maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature. Regular use can help prevent heat-related illnesses.
7. Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day
Try to stay indoors during the peak heat hours. If you must go outside, do so in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.
8. Protect Your Skin
Before going outside, apply moisturizer and sunscreen. Wearing a hat or using an umbrella can also help protect you from direct sunlight.
9. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Eating fruits and vegetables with high water content, like watermelon and cucumbers, can also help keep you hydrated.
10. Choose Appropriate Clothing
Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to help your body stay cool. Carry a damp cloth to apply to your neck for immediate relief.
MoHAP’s Heat Exhaustion Prevention Campaign
MoHAP recently launched a heat exhaustion prevention campaign, which began on July 1. The campaign, named “Your Safety is Our Goal,” aims to support outdoor workers, especially in the construction industry, by offering free medical checkups and first aid training.
So far, the campaign has helped 3,300 workers with medical exams, awareness talks, and essential supplies. It also provides advice on preventing heat exhaustion and free health consultations for early detection of heat-related symptoms.
In partnership with the Sharjah Supreme Council for Family Affairs and other organizations, the campaign covers areas such as Al Hamriyah, Al Dhaid, and Kalba University. It will continue until August 15, to reach 6,000 workers across Sharjah.
Why Following Heatwave Guidelines is Important
As heatwaves become more frequent, everyone must stay informed and take the necessary precautions. MoHAP’s guidelines and the ongoing campaign provide valuable resources to help protect against heat-related health issues. By following these recommendations, you can ensure a safer and more comfortable summer.
This information is designed to keep you safe during extreme heat, making sure you can manage the risks and enjoy the season without unnecessary health concerns.
