Dubai is taking bold steps to ease traffic congestion and improve mobility for residents and visitors alike. As part of a transformative infrastructure plan, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled 57 major road projects set for completion by 2027.
Endorsed by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, the strategy seeks to cut travel times and enhance traffic capacity across Dubai.

Here’s what’s in store and how it will impact the way Dubai moves.
Major Overhaul: 226km of New Roads, 115 Bridges and Tunnels
Under its 2025–2027 masterplan, the RTA will construct 226 kilometers of new roads and build 115 bridges and tunnels across the city. These developments are spread across 11 key corridors, including eight vertical roadways and three newly designated routes.
This comprehensive plan is designed to address growing traffic volumes, enhance road safety, and provide seamless connectivity between fast-growing residential and commercial zones.
Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra Corridor: Cutting Commutes by 75%
Among the headline projects is the Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra Corridor, a massive 16-kilometre stretch currently halfway to completion.
This upgrade will introduce new bridges and tunnels while modernizing four critical intersections. Once finished, it will slash travel times from 46 minutes to just 11, offering much-needed relief for commuters heading between the city’s inland developments and coastal districts.
Hessa Street Transformation: More Capacity, Less Congestion
Another major initiative is the Hessa Street road project, currently 60% complete. Known for its bottlenecks during peak hours, Hessa Street will see:
- 9,000 metres of new bridges
- Doubling of road capacity from 4,000 to 8,000 vehicles per hour
- A drop in travel time from 30 minutes to just seven
The upgrades will benefit 640,000 residents, featuring a 13.5km cycling and e-scooter track for sustainable mobility between Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills.
Al Fay Street Corridor: Connecting Communities Across Key Arterials
The Dhs1.5 billion Al Fay Street Corridor Project is also taking shape. This infrastructure giant will link Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Emirates Road, running through Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street.
Highlights include:
- 12.9km of new roads
- 13.5km of bridges
- Five major intersections
- Capacity for 64,400 vehicles per hour
This corridor is expected to benefit around 600,000 residents, streamlining east-west travel across Dubai’s rapidly expanding suburbs.
Smarter Roads: Sheikh Zayed Road Gets a Digital Boost
Dubai’s most iconic highway, Sheikh Zayed Road, is also seeing a digital transformation. In early 2025, the city introduced dynamic Salik tolls and smart parking tariffs to ease peak-time congestion.
According to the RTA:
- Traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road has dropped by 9%
- Public transport usage increased by 4%
- Dynamic parking contributed to a 2% reduction in vehicle volume and 1% uptick in public transport
These figures reflect a growing shift toward smarter, data-driven mobility solutions in Dubai.
A Coordinated Push: Public and Private Sectors Align
The scope and scale of the new projects reflect a rare level of coordination between government agencies and the private sector.
A recent high-level meeting involving 50 entities discussed synchronized strategies to improve mobility—from road upgrades and smart tolling to enhancing public transportation infrastructure.
The goal: a more livable, efficient, and connected Dubai by 2027.
What This Means for Residents
These projects will benefit commuters, cyclists, and e-scooter users, cutting travel times by over 70% on some routes and doubling capacity in key areas for faster, more reliable journeys.
The upgrades enhance multi-modal transport, connecting roads, cycling, e-scooters, and public transit, supporting Dubai’s 2040 plan for a 20-minute city.
A City on the Move
Dubai’s road network investment aims to eliminate traffic jams, with 57 projects driving smart, sustainable mobility.
