Dubai is home to the best infrastructure in the world. From spell-binding architecture to upcoming futuristic projects, the emirate has it all. And while Dubai is famous for its glitz, it is also known to offer one of the world’s cheapest and best public transport systems. From visitors to residents, everyone navigates around Dubai using public transport. And as per data released by Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority(RTA), around a million riders in the first half of 2023 have used public transportation and shared mobility. Read on for all the deets.

Public Transport Users Increased By Over 11 Per Cent In First Half Of 2023
As per the RTA report, public transport (Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, public buses, marine transport modes abras, ferry, water taxi, water bus) was used by nearly 337 million riders in the first half of 2023. In 2022, the figures were clocked at 304.6 million riders, meaning 2023 has seen a significant increase of nearly 11 per cent. The daily average of public transport modes shared mobility and taxis in the first half of 2023 was around 1.86 million riders, compared to about 1.68 million riders, in the first half of 2022.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, said: “Dubai Metro and taxis accounted for the largest ridership share of public transport, shared mobility means and taxis, with 36.5 per cent for Dubai Metro, and 29 per cent for Dubai Taxi, while public buses contributed to 24.5 per cent.”
In fact, March 2023 was the busiest of all months recording about 60 million riders. Ridership in other months ranged from 53 to 58 million riders.
Dubai’s integrated public transport network has now become the backbone of people’s movement around Dubai. For metro rides, around 123.4 million riders travelled on red and green lines in the first half of 2023. Burjuman and Union stations gained maximum traffic. Burjman served 7.25 million riders, whereas Union Station was used by 5.6 million riders.

On the red line, the busiest station was Al Rigga, followed by the Mall of the Emirates and Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station. And when it comes to the green line, Sharaf DG Station ranked first, followed by Baniyas Station. Speaking about Dubai Tram, around 4.2 million riders used this public transport service in the first half of 2023. Public buses were used by 83 million riders, and 9.1 million riders used marine transport.
