The singer, Zubeen Garg, who gave us timeless hits like Ya Ali (Gangster), Dil Tu Hi Bata (Krrish 3), and countless Assamese chartbusters, has left us all in shock. The multi-talented star, who could sing, act, direct, and win hearts in equal measure, passed away in Singapore after a tragic scuba diving accident.
Zubeen Garg dies at 52
The 52-year-old legend was in Singapore for the North East India Festival and was supposed to perform on September 20 and 21. Fans were gearing up for yet another magical stage performance, but fate had other plans. While scuba diving, Zubeen reportedly struggled with breathing underwater. Though rescuers pulled him out and CPR was performed, he was later declared dead at Singapore General Hospital around 2:30 pm IST.
Anuj Kumar Boruah, representing the North East India Festival, shared the heartbreaking details: “It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Zubeen Garg’s passing. While scuba diving, he experienced breathing difficulties and was immediately given CPR before being rushed to Singapore General Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was declared deceased in the ICU around 2.30 pm IST.” His words only echoed the pain of millions across India.
Assam’s Chief Minister Pays Tribute
The news shook Assam to its core. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma penned an emotional note: “Today Assam lost one of its favourite sons. I am at a loss for words to describe what Zubeen meant for Assam. He has gone too early, this was not an age to go. Zubeen’s voice had an unmatched ability to energize people, and his music spoke directly to our minds and souls. He has left a void that will never be filled. Our future generations will remember him as a stalwart of Assam’s culture, and his works will continue to inspire many talented artists in the days and years to come.”

Zubeen: The Rockstar Who Did It All
Zubeen wasn’t just another playback singer – he was a powerhouse who dabbled in everything from composing to acting. His breakthrough Ya Ali became a nationwide anthem, while Dil Tu Hi Bata cemented his Bollywood legacy. He also gave Assamese cinema massive blockbusters like Mission China, Kanchanjunga, Dinabandhu, and Mon Jai.
He sang in multiple languages, directed films, and was known for his fearless opinions and larger-than-life personality. Zubeen was the kind of artist who left no genre untouched and no fan unimpressed.
Just a few years ago, Zubeen had survived a scary head injury, and fans thought nothing could keep their star down. But today, the voice that once defined passion, love, and rebellion has fallen silent forever.
For Assam, Bollywood, and fans across the globe, this isn’t just the loss of a singer, it’s the loss of an era.
Team Social Kandura extends deepest condolences to Zubeen Garg’s family, friends, and fans. Rest in music, Zubeen – you’ll forever be our “Ya Ali” of melodies.
