With Ramadan just around the corner, Dubai residents are gearing up for a unique experience as the Holy Month coincides with winter for the first time in 24 years, harking back to the winter Ramadan observed in the year 2000.
This year, the lunar-based Islamic calendar positions Ramadan to commence on Monday, March 11. Winter officially started on December 21, extending its cool embrace until March 20, promising a more comfortable environment for fasting. Residents will observe a 13-hour and 14-minute fast on the first day, with the fasting window gradually expanding throughout the month.
The start of Winter Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, expected to grace the skies on Sunday, March 10, marking the 29th day of the Islamic month of Shaban.
The Lunar Calendar
Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar, follows the cycles of the moon. Unlike the Gregorian solar calendar, the Islamic calendar, spanning 354 or 355 days, is approximately 11 days shorter than the solar year. It commences with the hijra, Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina, celebrated as the Islamic New Year. Moon sighting committees announce the onset and conclusion of Ramadan, culminating in the joyous celebration of Eid Al Fitr.

Winter Ramadan Fasting: A Comfortable Endeavor
Fasting during winter in Dubai is a relief, with shorter days reducing the fasting duration. The cooler temperatures also make abstaining from water more manageable. The National Centre of Meteorology predicts a pleasant average temperature of 28 degrees Celsius during Ramadan, providing an ideal backdrop for outdoor activities.
Embracing Tradition with Outdoor Gatherings
A distinct feature of Winter Ramadan in Dubai is the communal iftar, the evening meal that breaks the fast. This year, many iftar tents are anticipated to offer outdoor settings, allowing residents to relish the sunset and dine under the stars during suhoor.

These vibrant shopping events, running from sunset into the early morning hours, offer an array of goods, including kaftans, dates, and lanterns. With henna designs, local cultural experiences, and diverse cuisines, these markets provide a delightful atmosphere for families.
Eid Al Fitr Holidays: A Nine-Day Celebration
As Winter Ramadan concludes, Dubai anticipates the arrival of Eid Al Fitr, a festive celebration marking the end of the fasting period. Predicted to span from Monday, April 8, to Friday, April 12, this nine-day holiday presents an ideal opportunity for residents to enjoy pool days, staycations, or short getaways across the GCC region, with the weather forecasted to be delightful.
Dubai residents can look forward to a distinctive Ramadan experience this year, where tradition seamlessly blends with the comfort of the winter season, creating moments of joy and reflection.
