There are a million reasons why Baazigar lives rent-free in our hearts, from Shah Rukh Khan’s bad-boy charm to Kajol’s screen magic and, of course, that unforgettable “Haar ke jeetne wale ko…” dialogue that became a life motto. However, the film we all worship almost had an ending that would have dropped jaws and broken hearts. Director duo Abbas-Mustan just revealed the original climax, it’s not what you think.
Baazigar Plot Twist That Almost Was! Kajol Was Supposed To Kill Shah Rukh Khan?
Before Shah Rukh Khan romanced entire generations with his signature outstretched arms, he played a total anti-hero in Baazigar and did it so well that it became iconic. Because the OG script had him completely dark and twisted, without even a whiff of the emotional backstory we all cried over. The initial draft ended with Kajol’s character killing him.
According to Mustan,“It was a new concept at that time. We thought of Shah Rukh’s character as a hero. He was negative, but he was our hero, and also, you have to understand why he did what he did in the film. For instance, if some character is doing something negative, but in the background he has some good qualities or there is a reason for him to turn negative, then if his character turns negative, that is also okay.”
The directors didn’t just tweak a few lines; they completely revamped the film’s soul. They asked producers for extra time, rewrote major portions, and ensured Baazigar wasn’t just a revenge thriller, but an emotional rollercoaster with depth.
Here’s why the ending changed
Mustan shared, “In the first draft of the film, the hero was an out-and-out negative character who had a tough childhood — his father was a drunkard who beat his mother, and the kid grew up wishing to become rich. After growing up, he plans to get into a relationship with the daughters of a millionaire, eventually killing one of them to take over the empire. Later, the second girl uncovers his true intentions and kills him. That was the first draft of the film.”
If the original ending had stayed, Kajol’s character would’ve been the one to end SRK’s game. Can you even imagine? “We realised that the film would not work without emotions, and the biggest emotion is the mother and father’s,” they explained.
Ten plots, a twisty storyline, and characters that walked the fine line between love and revenge – Baazigar remains a cult classic. It showed that heroes can be flawed, villains can be beautiful, and sometimes, heartbreak makes the best cinema.
