Abu Dhabi has officially activated its first dedicated vaccine distribution hub with the successful arrival of its inaugural shipment. This key achievement is part of HELM – the capital’s Life Science Cluster launched in April 2025 – and signals a bold move to position the UAE as a central player in global health security.
The new facility, located within KEZAD and operated by Rafed (a PureHealth company), is designed to streamline the storage, handling and delivery of vaccines with precision and efficiency. It’s a critical step forward in enhancing vaccine equity, pandemic preparedness, and sustainable supply chain capabilities.

The power of partnership: A joint national effort
The hub was developed through close collaboration between several major UAE entities, including the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Investment Office, AD Ports Group, Etihad Cargo and global pharmaceutical company GSK.
This hub also marks GSK’s first vaccine distribution centre in the Middle East and only the fourth such facility in the world. The advanced setup enables temperature-controlled handling of over 20 types of vaccines, ready for rapid deployment across the GCC, South Asia and Africa.
Backed by Etihad Cargo’s PharmaLife service, the hub is connected to over 100 international destinations. This ensures that vaccines can be delivered swiftly and safely, reducing spoilage risks and ensuring they reach communities in need without delay.
Built for global impact, designed for local resilience
With its smart infrastructure, real-time monitoring, and cold-chain technology, the facility enhances both the UAE’s internal vaccine security and its ability to contribute meaningfully to global health initiatives.
Officials from the Department of Health noted that this launch supports the UAE’s broader strategy to develop a resilient healthcare ecosystem. The facility will also play a vital role in enabling faster response times during health emergencies, making it a key piece in the national health infrastructure.
HELM: Abu Dhabi’s life sciences vision in action
This operational milestone is the first major achievement under HELM – Abu Dhabi’s Life Science Cluster. HELM aims to position the UAE as a regional leader in biotech, research and development, pharmaceutical manufacturing and healthcare innovation.
By activating the hub, HELM moves from strategy to execution, setting the stage for further investment, international partnerships, and job creation in the medical and logistics sectors.
The cluster’s long-term vision includes attracting world-class health-tech companies, enhancing clinical trials, and developing education and talent pipelines in the life sciences field.
What comes next?
Following the success of its first shipment, the Abu Dhabi vaccine distribution hub will now expand its capabilities. Future plans include:
- Onboarding more global pharmaceutical partners
- Increasing capacity for advanced biologics
- Supporting clinical distribution for sensitive treatments
- Deepening regulatory coordination with health authorities
This expansion will solidify Abu Dhabi’s role as a hub for healthcare innovation while also improving access to life-saving treatments for millions worldwide.
UAE residents set to benefit
Beyond its international reach, the hub provides tangible benefits to communities across the UAE. It ensures that residents will have quicker access to essential vaccines, improves national health resilience, and contributes to building a knowledge-based economy.
With this development, the UAE continues its momentum as a forward-looking nation investing in critical infrastructure that not only serves today’s needs but also secures future generations.
