Residents across the UAE could be looking at an extended holiday at the end of the year as UAE National Day 2025 approaches. With December 2 falling on a Tuesday, and public holiday guidelines allowing shifts to create long weekends, this year’s National Day could come with a rare five-day break.
Public Holiday Rules Could Work in Favour of Residents
UAE regulations officially mark National Day on December 2 and 3, but they also allow shifting the holidays to start or end the workweek. The change often ensures residents enjoy longer breaks, a trend seen with recent non-religious holidays.
Since December 2 falls on a Tuesday, officials may declare December 1 a holiday—either to extend the break or replace the 3rd. When combined with the weekend starting from Saturday, November 29, this could translate into a four- or even five-day weekend.
The Commemoration Day Factor
Adding to the potential for a longer break is UAE Commemoration Day, which falls on Sunday, November 30. While this day is not always granted as a public holiday, the UAE’s labour laws give local governments the authority to grant additional holidays as they see fit.
If Commemoration Day is included in the break by local government decree—particularly in emirates like Dubai—then UAE residents could enjoy a five-day continuous break from Saturday to Wednesday.
A Pattern That Suggests More Time Off
In previous years, the UAE has shown a pattern of adjusting non-religious public holidays to maximise leisure time for residents. For instance, the Islamic New Year in 2024 was moved to a Friday to align with the weekend, even though such holidays are usually confirmed by moon sightings. This adjustment allowed people to plan better and enjoy a longer, uninterrupted break.
Given this precedent, many believe it’s quite likely that UAE National Day 2025 will follow a similar path. Moving the December 3 holiday to Monday, or including Commemoration Day, would not be unprecedented.
A Golden Opportunity for Travel and Local Plans
If a five-day weekend does materialise, it’s expected to be a prime time for both domestic tourism and regional travel. Many residents may opt for quick escapes to nearby countries or luxury stays within the UAE—from coastal resorts in Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah to city breaks in Abu Dhabi.
For those staying closer to home, cities like Dubai typically host large-scale events including fireworks, light shows, traditional performances, and cultural parades to mark National Day. Popular locations such as Downtown Dubai, Bluewaters Island, and Global Village become focal points for the celebrations.
Start Planning Ahead
Though the official public holiday announcement is still a few months away, early indicators suggest that this could be one of the longest breaks of the year. Once officials confirm the holiday dates, travel demand surges—prompting residents to book flights, hotels, and staycations early.
It’s also a good time for those in the events or hospitality industry to start preparing for higher footfall and demand during the National Day period.
While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, signs point to the possibility of a four- or five-day break for UAE National Day 2025. Whether you’re planning a quick trip abroad, a staycation, or time with family and friends, now is the moment to start considering your options.
