The UAE’s Indian expatriate community is set to mark the 79th Indian Independence Day with a series of ceremonies and cultural gatherings, reflecting both national pride and the deep cultural ties between India and the Emirates.
In Dubai, the Indian Business and Professional Council (IBPC) is hosting its flagship Independence Day event at the Grand Hyatt Dubai. Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, will attend alongside Satish Kumar Sivan, the Consul General of India in Dubai. Over 450 guests, including prominent business leaders and community representatives, are expected to join an evening programme featuring music, dance, and cultural performances inspired by India’s diverse traditions.

According to IBPC, this year’s celebration also aims to highlight initiatives on sustainability, youth leadership, and cross-cultural professional exchanges, recognising the contributions of the Indian community to the UAE’s social and economic landscape.
Ajman Opens a New Chapter with a Community Library
In Ajman, the Indian Association Ajman (IAA) will combine the flag-hoisting ceremony with the inauguration of a community library. Stocked with over 5,000 books in multiple genres, the library will be free for residents to use and will feature a dedicated section highlighting India’s history, literature, and constitutional values.
A framed copy of the Preamble of the Indian Constitution will be displayed prominently, serving both as an educational piece and a cultural reminder.
Morning Ceremonies Across the Emirates
Independence Day celebrations will begin early across the UAE.
- Abu Dhabi: The India Social and Cultural Centre will raise the flag at 6:30 am, with cultural performances scheduled for the evening.
- Sharjah: The day begins at 8 am with the flag hoisting, followed by music, dance, and an award ceremony honouring over 300 students from a local summer camp.
- Fujairah & Umm Al Quwain: The Indian Social Club in Fujairah will host the ceremony at 7:30 am, with a similar gathering at the same time in Umm Al Quwain.
- Ras Al Khaimah: Celebrations will take place at 8:30 am at the Indian Relief Committee premises.
Official ceremonies will also be held at the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Indian Consulate in Dubai.
Burj Khalifa to Glow in the Tricolour
Adding to the day’s significance, the Burj Khalifa will light up in the colours of the Indian flag in the evening, creating a striking symbol of the close bond between the two nations. The display is expected to attract large crowds and will serve as a photographic highlight for the community.
More Than a Celebration of Freedom
For many, the day is an opportunity not just to celebrate India’s independence but also to reflect on the shared history, mutual respect, and collaborative growth between India and the UAE. With cultural exchanges, community projects, and symbolic gestures like the Burj Khalifa lighting, the celebrations are set to strengthen bonds and inspire the next generation of leaders within the diaspora.
