UAE Unveils World’s First Jet-Powered Firefighting Drone -‘Suhail’

The United Arab Emirates has made headlines at Expo 2025 in Osaka with the unveiling of ‘Suhail’ — the world’s first jet-powered firefighting drone. Developed by the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority, the drone is designed to support fire and rescue operations in areas where traditional firefighting methods may be limited or too dangerous for personnel.

A move for Firefighting Technology

Equipped with a powerful jet propulsion system, ‘Suhail’ is capable of vertical take-off and high-speed maneuvering, making it well-suited for rapid response in high-risk environments. The drone is also outfitted with advanced artificial intelligence systems and real-time 3D mapping technology to help it operate autonomously, even in locations where GPS signals are unavailable.

The introduction of ‘Suhail’ marks a major advancement in the use of unmanned aerial systems for public safety and emergency services.

Designed for Extreme Situations

One of the standout features of the drone is its ability to withstand extreme firefighting conditions. According to officials, it has been engineered to handle the high pressure and impact of aerial water discharge. A powerful water cannon mounted on a stabilized axis allows for accurate targeting of fire sources, minimizing the need for human exposure in dangerous areas.

With its onboard LiDAR technology and computer vision, the drone can scan its environment in real time, detect fire locations, and avoid physical obstacles with high precision.

Innovation Rooted in Field Experience

The development of ‘Suhail’ was inspired by real-world operational challenges faced by emergency teams. Major Engineer Ali Hassan Al Madfaei, the Project Director for Autonomous Systems and AI at the Civil Defence Authority, noted that the concept stemmed from direct feedback during firefighting operations.

“We needed a tool that enhances both the safety and efficiency of our response teams,” he explained. “Suhail offers the ability to reach hazardous locations quickly, assess the situation from above, and support ground teams with immediate action.”

Bridging Speed, Safety, and Smart Technology

Brigadier General Salem Abdullah bin Barak Al Dhaheri, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority, highlighted the role of innovation in improving emergency responses. He stated, “Suhail represents our vision for faster and safer firefighting. It reflects our leadership’s commitment to using technology for public protection.”

He added that the drone’s deployment could significantly reduce response times and improve overall operational outcomes, especially in large-scale or high-rise urban fires.

Global Attention at Expo 2025

The launch of ‘Suhail’ has drawn international attention at the UAE Pavilion during Expo 2025, reinforcing the country’s position as a leader in technological innovation and public safety. It also signals the UAE’s broader vision of integrating AI and smart systems into civil and emergency services.

With countries increasingly turning to tech-based solutions for disaster management, ‘Suhail’ could serve as a model for future firefighting strategies around the world.

As cities continue to grow and fire risks evolve, technology like ‘Suhail’ offers a glimpse into the future of urban emergency response. The UAE’s pioneering move sets a strong example of how advanced engineering and smart systems can be used to save lives while protecting those who serve on the front lines.
