UAE Launches Comprehensive Campaign to Combat Heat Exhaustion

Promoting Safety as temperature crosses 50°C in UAE

Amid scorching temperatures nearing 50°C, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has rolled out a major effort to tackle heat-related illnesses. This initiative comes as a proactive response to protect outdoor workers and ensure community health during the sweltering summer months.

Protecting Workers in the Heat

The ‘Heat Exhaustion Prevention’ campaign, in partnership with the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA), focuses on educating and safeguarding workers exposed to direct sunlight. Mohammed Al Zarooni, director of MoHAP’s Representative Office in Sharjah, emphasized the campaign’s role in promoting safety and well-being among those most vulnerable to heat stress.

Strategies and Actions

  • First Aid Training: More than 6,000 workers will receive training to help them recognize and respond to symptoms of heat-related illnesses promptly.
  • Community Outreach: Using SMS alerts and social media, the campaign aims to raise awareness about the signs of heat exhaustion and best practices for prevention.
  • On-Site Education: Workplaces will host sessions to educate workers on staying hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun.
  • Health Services: Free health screenings, including checks for vision and blood pressure, will be provided alongside essential supplies like eyeglasses.
  • Support for Domestic Workers: Special efforts will ensure that families are informed about protecting domestic workers who work outdoors.

Promoting Safety and Well-being

Iman Rashid Saif from SCFA’s Health Promotion Department highlighted the campaign’s emphasis on hydration and nutritional advice to build resilience against heat stress. Beyond immediate health concerns, the initiative aims to cultivate a culture of safety and health awareness across the UAE.

‘Heat Exhaustion Prevention’ Campaign in UAE

As the campaign unfolds across various regions, including Sharjah, Al Dhaid, and Khorfakkan, its impact is expected to resonate widely. By integrating education with practical support measures, UAE authorities aim to set a precedent for proactive public health management in extreme weather conditions.

The ‘Heat Exhaustion Prevention’ campaign reflects the UAE government’s proactive approach to addressing health challenges posed by extreme heat. By combining education, support services, and community engagement, this initiative aims not only to protect vulnerable workers but also to promote a resilient and well-informed society.

The UAE’s initiative serves as a model for effective public health strategies, demonstrating a commitment to mitigating the impact of extreme weather on community health. As the campaign progresses, its success will be measured by improvements in public health outcomes and the cultivation of a safer, more informed society.
