The UAE Gears Up for the Longest Nights of the Year

Embracing the Celestial Symphony and Cooler Nights in the Emirates

As the year draws to a close, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is about to witness the fascinating spectacle of the winter solstice, signaling the onset of the shortest days and longest nights of 2023. From December 18 to Sunday, December 24, residents can anticipate approximately 13 hours and 28 minutes of nightfall, according to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomy Society.

Unraveling the Winter Solstice

Rooted in the Latin words for ‘sun’ and ‘to stand still,’ the winter solstice is a celestial event occurring twice a year, with each hemisphere reaching its maximum tilt away from the Sun. During this phenomenon, the sun takes its shortest path across the sky, resulting in the briefest day of the year and, consequently, the lengthiest night.

The winter solstice marks the inception of a gradual shift toward longer days, ultimately leading to the Summer Solstice around June 20-22, when daylight prevails for the maximum duration in the entire year.

Weather Insights for the UAE

Despite a perceptible coolness in the air over the past week, it’s crucial to note that the winter solstice does not necessarily herald the coldest night of the year. The UAE witnessed its lowest recorded temperature in January 2021, plummeting to -2ºC, a historic moment as temperatures dipped below zero for the first time.

Looking ahead, the weather forecast for the upcoming week promises a mild and enjoyable chill. Abu Dhabi is projected to experience a low of 12 degrees on Friday, while Dubai is expected to cool down to 14 degrees, also on Friday. Residents in the Northern Emirates can anticipate temperatures ranging from 14 to 16 degrees throughout the week.

Embracing the Winter Vibe

As the UAE embraces the winter solstice, it provides a unique opportunity for residents to revel in the celestial display and savor the cooler climate. Whether engaging in outdoor activities or enjoying warm beverages, this period offers a brief respite from the usual warmth of the region.

The winter solstice not only unveils the astronomical wonder of extended nights but also invites the UAE community to celebrate the diversity of its climate. As the nights lengthen and the days shorten, let’s welcome the winter solstice with open arms, appreciating the celestial marvels gracing our skies.
