The UAE has officially called on residents to observe and report the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon on the evening of Saturday, March 29, 2025. The sighting will determine the end of Ramadan 2025 and the start of Eid Al Fitr, one of the most significant celebrations in Islam.
The UAE moon-sighting committee has urged individuals to look out for the crescent moon and report their findings. This traditional practice follows Islamic guidelines, where the lunar cycle determines the Hijri calendar months.

Despite the official call for moon sighting, astronomical forecasts suggest that spotting the crescent moon on March 29 may be difficult. Experts predict that the Shawwal moon will be invisible in some parts of the world and barely visible in others, even with advanced telescopes.
If unsighted, the moon will extend Ramadan 2025 to 30 days, with Eid starting on March 31, 2025.
Public Holidays for Eid Al Fitr in the UAE
The UAE government has announced the Eid Al Fitr public holiday schedule for both public and private sector employees.
- If Ramadan lasts 29 days, the holiday will begin on Sunday, March 30, and end on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
- If Ramadan extends to 30 days, an additional holiday will be granted on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, resulting in a five-day long weekend for UAE residents.
Official Moon-Sighting Decision
While astronomical data offers insights, Eid’s final confirmation depends on the sighting of the crescent moon. The UAE’s moon-sighting committee will meet on March 29, 2025, to review reports and announce results.
The Sharia-compliant moon-sighting process follows religious traditions while incorporating modern astronomical advancements.
How the UAE Prepares for Eid Al Fitr
Eid Al Fitr is a time of celebration, prayer, and generosity. Mosques across the country will hold Eid prayers, and families will gather for festive meals. Charitable giving (Zakat Al Fitr) is also an essential part of the celebrations, with residents encouraged to donate before Eid prayers.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s malls, restaurants, and venues will enhance the festive spirit with exclusive Eid offers and events.
Stay Updated on Eid Announcements
Residents are encouraged to stay tuned for official announcements from the UAE government regarding the final Eid date. The decision will be based on both moon-sighting reports and astronomical calculations.
