The UAE’s aviation sector recorded a solid performance in the first half of 2025, with airports across the country welcoming 75.4 million passengers. This marks a 5% increase compared to the same period last year, underscoring the country’s status as a key international travel hub.
National carriers contributed significantly to this growth, adding 15 new destinations to their networks in the first six months. These routes have expanded the UAE’s reach into Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, offering travellers more direct connections and creating opportunities for trade and tourism.
Passenger Growth Driven by Network Expansion
Dubai International Airport (DXB) continued to lead in passenger numbers, handling 46 million travellers between January and June. Despite global operational challenges, the airport maintained strong throughput and is on track to exceed 96 million passengers by the end of the year.
Abu Dhabi’s airports also saw notable gains, recording 15.8 million passengers in the same period — an increase of over 13%. Zayed International Airport accounted for the vast majority of this traffic, benefitting from additional flight frequencies and new international connections.
Air Traffic and Cargo on the Rise
The first half of 2025 saw 531,000 air traffic movements across the country, up 6.2% year-on-year. This steady climb reflects the resilience of the UAE’s aviation sector and its role as a critical link between global markets.
Cargo volumes also strengthened, growing by 4.7%. National carriers were responsible for around two-thirds of all freight handled, highlighting their importance not just for passenger travel but also for supply chain connectivity.
Strategic Role in the UAE Economy
Government officials have credited these results to the UAE’s open-skies policies, strategic airport infrastructure projects, and strong partnerships between aviation stakeholders. The sector continues to play a central role in supporting economic diversification, boosting tourism, and creating employment opportunities.
Ongoing developments, including the expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport and upgraded passenger facilities at key hubs, are expected to sustain this momentum over the coming years.
Outlook for the Remainder of 2025
With peak travel seasons approaching and more international routes planned, industry analysts expect the upward trend to continue. The combination of expanded flight options, increased cargo capacity, and robust airport operations positions the UAE to close 2025 with record-breaking numbers.
