The 10th Traditional Handicrafts Festival has opened its doors today at Souq Al Qattara in Al Ain, showcasing the rich tapestry of Emirati culture. Running from October 29 to November 17, this festival, organized by the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) Abu Dhabi, focuses on celebrating the traditional crafts and artistry that define the UAE’s heritage.
Celebrate Emirati Craftsmanship
At the heart of the festival are the skilled artisans who breathe life into traditional crafts. Attendees can watch live demonstrations of palm frond weaving, pottery making, and intricate embroidery techniques like Sadu and Talli. Additionally, we encourage visitors to get hands-on and try out these crafts themselves. This interactive approach not only entertains attendees but also educates them about the skills passed down through generations.
A Family-Friendly Experience
With something for everyone, the festival is designed to be inclusive. Families, students, and tourists can explore various activities, including folk performances and concerts organized by Bait Al Oud. Special programs for women and children will also take place at Al Qattara Arts Center, ensuring that the festival is both engaging and educational. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., it allows plenty of time for visitors to soak in the cultural offerings.
Bridging Tradition and Modernity
This year’s festival emphasizes the importance of modern relevance. Many artisans adapt their traditional crafts for contemporary tastes, offering beautiful yet practical items. This blend of old and new helps keep Emirati culture alive and ensures that these crafts can find a place in today’s market. Visitors will see how these age-old techniques can be incorporated into modern lifestyles, making them not just relics of the past but living traditions.
Boosting Cultural Tourism
DCT Abu Dhabi aims to use the festival as a way to enhance cultural tourism. By highlighting Emirati crafts and fostering greater appreciation for local heritage, the festival is an invitation for both locals and international tourists to discover the beauty of Emirati culture. The engaging activities and workshops help promote a deeper understanding of the arts, while the enchanting atmosphere of Souq Al Qattara adds to the overall experience.

With free entry, the Traditional Handicrafts Festival is open to all, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to engage with Emirati culture. The setting in Al Ain, a city known for its historical significance, enhances the authenticity of the festival. Visitors can participate in family-friendly activities and discover crafts that resonate with Emirati traditions.
