Sharjah’s Child Safety Department (CSD) has unveiled a new initiative, “Their Safety First,” aimed at ensuring the safety of children during the cooler months. With over 20 thoughtfully planned initiatives, the campaign focuses on fostering awareness among families about crucial safety precautions for outdoor and public activities.
Running until February 19, 2025, this winter campaign is designed to empower parents, children, and communities to enjoy outdoor adventures responsibly and safely.
Why Winter Safety Matters
The cooler winter weather in the UAE encourages families to explore outdoor activities, including cycling, camping, and hiking. However, these activities bring certain risks if safety measures are not followed. From falls to road accidents, the campaign sheds light on potential hazards and offers practical solutions to avoid them.
By addressing key areas like bicycle and scooter safety, camping guidelines, and the importance of proper supervision, the initiative ensures that winter outings remain joyful and free of mishaps.
Key Features of the Campaign
Golden Rules for Safe Cycling
One of the most engaging aspects of the campaign is the “Golden Rules for Bicycle Riding” workshop, which is tailored for children and adolescents. Guided by expert trainers, these workshops provide:
- Hands-on learning with an eight-step guide to safe cycling
- Interactive Q&A sessions
- Live demonstrations of proper cycling techniques
Participants can also win prizes, making the experience educational and enjoyable.
Awareness Beyond Cycling
The campaign goes beyond cycling by organizing sessions for domestic workers, sharing tips on accident prevention, and creating educational videos to illustrate safe practices. Field visits are also planned to distribute safety materials, ensuring the message reaches a wide audience.
Reaching Communities Across Sharjah
The campaign expands its outreach to several prominent locations, including:
- Desert Police Park
- Al Hamriya Children’s Festival
- Major malls in Sharjah
- Mleiha National Park
By collaborating with schools, hospitals, and universities, the initiative amplifies its message to ensure maximum community participation.
Safety Through Collaboration
The campaign benefits from partnerships with organizations like the Sharjah Police, Sharjah Municipality, and the Prevention and Safety Authority. These collaborations strengthen efforts to create a safer environment for all families in the region.
Building a Culture of Safety
Hanadi Al Yafei, Director-General of CSD, emphasized the significance of community involvement in ensuring safety. By encouraging parents to supervise their children and follow safety guidelines, the campaign promotes a culture of collective responsibility.
She also highlighted how outdoor activities contribute to children’s physical and mental well-being, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a balance between fun and safety.
Why It Matters
Winter activities offer an excellent opportunity for families to bond and for children to explore the outdoors. The campaign’s ultimate goal is to make these experiences safe, enriching, and worry-free.
A Call for Safer Winters
Sharjah’s “Their Safety First” campaign is a commendable effort to protect children and ensure their well-being. We encourage parents and caregivers to join the workshops and awareness programs to ensure a safe and enjoyable winter season for everyone.
