On June 4, veteran actress Sulochana Latkar, affectionately known as Sulochana Didi, passed away at the age of 94. She has career spanning over six decades. She played memorable roles in more than 250 Hindi and 50 Marathi films. Also, portraying the screen mother to many top stars.
Sulochana had been suffering from respiratory illness for the past few months, and her condition had recently deteriorated. She got admitted to Sushrusha Hospital in Dadar. There she took her last breath.
Sulochana created a place for heself in the Marathi Film industry
Throughout her career, Sulochana showcased her versatility. She portrayed a wide range of roles, from lead heroines to supporting characters and motherly figures. Some of her notable early performances were in Marathi films like ‘Sasurvas,’ ‘Vahinichya Bangdya,’ ‘Meeth Bhakar,’ ‘Sangtye Aika,’ and ‘Dhakti Jau,’ among many others.
Her journey in bollywood
Sulochana was born on July 30, 1928, in the Khadaklat village of Belagavi (now in Karnataka). The actor made her film debut in 1946. One of her most memorable Bollywood films was the Bimal Roy classic, ‘Bandini’ (1963). It continues to be in our hearts till date.
Her list of Hindi films includes notable titles such as ‘Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai,’ ‘Duniya,’ ‘Amir Garib,’ ‘Baharon Ke Sapne,’ ‘Kati Patang,’ ‘Mere Jeevan Saathi,’ ‘Pyar Mohabbat,’ ‘Duniya,’ ‘Johny Mera Naam’ ‘Warrant,’ ‘Joshila,’ ‘Doli,’ ‘Prem Nagar,’ ‘Aakraman,’ ‘Bhola Bhala,’ ‘Tyaag,’ ‘Aashiq Hoon Baharaon Ka,’ ‘Adhikar,’ ‘Nai Roshni,’ ‘Aaye Din Bahar Ke,’ ‘Aaye Milan Ki Bela,’ ‘Ab Dilli Dur Nahin,’ ‘Majboor,’ ‘Gora Aur Kala,’ ‘Devar,’ ‘Kahani Kismat Ki,’ ‘Talaash,’ and ‘Azaad.’
Throughout her career, Sulochana played the on-screen mother to numerous stars, including Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Rajendra Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Nutan, Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rehman, Zeenat Aman, Tanuja, and many more.
She recieved respectful awards
Sulochana received several accolades for her contributions to Indian cinema. She was conferred with the Padma Shri in 1999. Followed by the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. The Maharashtra government also bestowed upon her the “Maharashtra Bhushan Award,” the highest honour of the state.
Upon hearing the news of Sulochana’s demise, top leaders including Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and numerous Bollywood personalities expressed their grief.
May Sulochana Didi’s soul rest in peace. She will always be remembered for leaving behind her remarkable legacy in the world of Indian cinema.
