Moving to Abu Dhabi? Learn how to set up water and electricity smoothly with our easy, step-by-step guide

Moving to a new home can be exciting but also a bit overwhelming, especially when it comes to setting up essential services like water and electricity. If you’re moving to Abu Dhabi, here’s a straightforward guide to help you get started.

1. Register with Tawtheeq

What is Tawtheeq?

Tawtheeq is Abu Dhabi’s official registry for tenancy contracts. It simplifies the rental process and is crucial for setting up your utilities.

How to Register

  • Through a Management Company: If you rent through a property management company, they usually handle the registration for you.
  • On Your Own: If not, you can register by visiting an Abu Dhabi Municipality customer service center or by completing an e-form on the TAMM website.

2. Setting Up Your ADDC Account

Once you’re registered with Tawtheeq, the next step is to set up your utility account with the Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC).

How to Do It

  • Online: Visit the ADDC website.
  • In-Person: Go to a local ADDC branch. Use their branch locator online to find the nearest service center that handles ‘Water and electricity requests for new tenants.’

Security Deposit

  • Amount: You will need to pay a refundable security deposit of Dh1,000.
  • Refund: This deposit will be included in your first bill and refunded when you close the account or transfer it to a new property.

3. Documents You Need

For Tenants

  • Passport
  • Emirates ID
  • Family book (for UAE nationals)
  • Tenancy contract
  • Previous account closing letter for the property you’re moving into

For Property Owners

  • Passport
  • Emirates ID
  • Family book (for UAE nationals)
  • Valid premise ownership deed or site plan from AD Municipality
  • Previous account closing letter

Note on Emirates ID

If you don’t have an Emirates ID yet, you can still set up your account but must provide the ID number within 40 days of your move-in date.

4. Final Steps

After submitting the required documents, you will receive an email and SMS about the status of your utility accounts, usually within two days.

5. Additional Tips

Act Quickly

  • Timing: Ensure you set up your utilities before moving in to avoid any disruptions.

Be Prepared

  • Documents: Have all necessary documents ready to prevent delays.

Know Your Options

  • Unique System: Abu Dhabi’s Tawtheeq system simplifies the rental and utility setup process.

Setting up water and electricity in your new Abu Dhabi home doesn’t have to be stressful. By following this simple guide, you can ensure a smooth transition and enjoy your new home without any hiccups.

Remember to act quickly, be prepared, and use Tawtheeq to make your move as easy as possible. Happy moving!
