Saudi Arabia to Launch Autonomous Air Taxi Flights This Year

EHang signs agreement with Saudi partners to roll out pilotless passenger and cargo air taxis in line with Vision 2030

Saudi Arabia is preparing to introduce autonomous air taxi flights before the end of this year, marking one of the most significant steps in regional smart mobility to date. The initiative follows a new partnership between local firms and Chinese technology company EHang, aimed at developing a network of pilotless aerial vehicles for passenger and cargo use.

The move signals a major leap in the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 agenda, while also setting the stage for new competition with the UAE in the race to dominate future mobility.

A bold step for regional transport

The agreement brings together Front End, Cluster 2 Airports, and EHang. Together, they will work on deploying autonomous aerial vehicles across 22 airports in the Kingdom. The plan goes beyond demonstration flights and focuses on actual operations, making Saudi Arabia one of the first countries globally to attempt a large-scale rollout.

The air taxis in focus are fully electric and designed to operate without pilots. They will be capable of carrying two passengers at a time, as well as a logistics version built for transporting goods. With test flights already carried out successfully in Saudi Arabia, authorities are now moving to commercialise the technology.

Passenger flights set for 2025

The first passenger services are scheduled to begin before the end of 2025, with rollout phases planned into 2026 and beyond. The programme will also see cargo drones introduced for logistics, public safety, and emergency services.

Industry analysts see this as a defining moment for the Middle East. Autonomous air mobility is projected to become a multi-billion-dollar industry worldwide by the end of the decade, and Saudi Arabia’s decision to move quickly positions the region as a key player.

Importance in dubai

Dubai has already laid down ambitious goals for autonomous transport, targeting 25 per cent of all trips to be driverless by 2030. The city has also announced plans for its own air taxi services, with pilot projects in collaboration with international manufacturers.

Saudi Arabia’s acceleration in this space adds competitive momentum, pushing Gulf cities to bring forward innovation timelines. For Dubai’s residents and businesses, the development signals that advanced mobility is no longer a future concept but a rapidly approaching reality.

Opportunities and collaboration potential

The Saudi programme opens the door for new partnerships across the Gulf. Areas such as air traffic management, safety technology, and vertiport infrastructure will require expertise and investment. Dubai-based firms may find opportunities to collaborate on regulatory frameworks, operational standards, and passenger experience models.

It also sets the stage for healthy competition. With both Saudi Arabia and the UAE racing to establish themselves as leaders in autonomous mobility, the region could emerge as a global hub for innovation in aviation.

A few challenges to overcome

Despite the ambitious plans, several challenges remain. Airspace integration is one of the most pressing issues, as authorities will need to ensure pilotless flights operate safely alongside conventional aircraft.

Public trust will also play a role. Residents must feel confident in using autonomous air taxis, which means safety records and transparent regulations will be crucial. Cost is another consideration, with questions around whether such services can be scaled to become affordable for everyday use.

Urban infrastructure, including vertiports, charging stations, and seamless links with ground transport, must also be in place for the project to succeed.

Saudi Arabia’s decision to launch autonomous air taxis by the end of 2025 is more than a transport initiative—it represents a new chapter for regional mobility. The Kingdom is positioning itself at the forefront of a sector set to redefine how people and goods move within and between cities.

For Dubai and the wider UAE, this development signals a call to action. With plans already in motion for driverless transport and air taxi services, the momentum in Saudi Arabia adds urgency to accelerate similar projects.

The skies of the Gulf are on the verge of transformation, and residents can expect to witness this change sooner than imagined.
