RTA Opens New Tunnel on Umm Suqeim Street, Reducing Travel Time to Just 3.8 Minutes

New 800 metre tunnel on Umm?Suqeim Street slashes drive time between Al?Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has opened a newly built tunnel on Umm Suqeim Street, stretching 800 metres and featuring four lanes in each direction. The addition is a key part of ongoing upgrades across the 16-kilometre Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor, aimed at improving traffic capacity and reducing travel time across densely populated areas.

Enhancing Connectivity in Expanding Communities

This tunnel is expected to benefit over one million residents in communities such as Dubai Hills, Al Barsha South, Arjan and Dubai Science Park. With the route connecting Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road, travel between Al Khail and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads has dropped from 9.7 minutes to just 3.8 minutes.

Engineers designed the tunnel to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, helping ease pressure on some of the city’s busiest junctions.

Improvements Beyond the Tunnel

The project covers a 4.6-kilometre section of Umm Suqeim Street. In addition to the underpass, the nearby intersection at Al Barsha South Street, close to King’s School, has also been redeveloped. This includes a signalised junction at ground level to help maintain smoother traffic flow and improve safety for residents and school zones.

Tunnel and intersection upgrades enhance east-west corridors and improve links to major vertical routes.

A Decade of Staged Expansion

The Umm Suqeim corridor has seen several development phases. Back in 2013, engineers completed bridges between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, improving movement across First Al Khail and Al Asayel Streets. Pedestrian bridges were also added to increase walkability between Al Barsha and Al Quoz.

In 2020, developers opened a 500-metre bridge to ease access to Dubai Hills Mall. Each project stage steadily improved commutes in central and southern Dubai.

Smart Technology Behind the Build

Dubai is actively shaping project delivery through its smart infrastructure vision. During construction, the RTA employed artificial intelligence and drone technology to monitor real-time data. This helped reduce field survey time by 60 per cent.

The team used time-lapse monitoring to track progress and enhance site management, boosting monitoring efficiency by 40 percent. These tools enabled the RTA to maintain quality standards while reducing delivery timelines.

The new RTA Umm Suqeim tunnel is more than just an addition to Dubai’s road network—it represents how the city is future-proofing its infrastructure to support growing communities. For commuters across Al Barsha South, Dubai Hills and neighbouring areas, the tunnel offers shorter drive times and a more reliable route across some of the city’s busiest intersections.
