Riyadh Renames 15 Squares to Honor Saudi Leaders

In a move to celebrate its rich heritage, Saudi Arabia has renamed 15 major squares in Riyadh after prominent imams and kings who have significantly contributed to the nation’s history. Directed by King Salman, this initiative proposed by Crown Prince Mohammed aligns with the Kingdom’s Founding Day on February 22.

A Tribute to Three Centuries of Leadership

The decision underscores the leadership’s commitment to preserving and honoring the legacy of figures who have been instrumental in the foundation, unification, and development of Saudi Arabia over the past 300 years. These leaders have safeguarded the nation’s resources, ensured its security, and contributed to the prosperity of its people.

The 15 squares, strategically located along Riyadh’s main thoroughfares, will bear the names of the following historical figures:

  • Imam Muhammad bin Saud: Founder of the First Saudi State, his leadership laid the groundwork for the nation’s future.
  • Imam Abdulaziz bin Muhammad: Son of Imam Muhammad bin Saud, he expanded the state’s territories and influence.
  • Imam Saud bin Abdulaziz: Known for his military prowess, he further consolidated the state’s power.
  • Imam Abdullah bin Saud: The last ruler of the First Saudi State, his reign faced significant challenges.
  • Imam Turki bin Abdullah: Founder of the Second Saudi State, he restored Saudi rule after a period of decline.
  • Imam Faisal bin Turki: His leadership was marked by efforts to stabilize and strengthen the state.
  • Imam Abdullah bin Faisal: Faced internal conflicts but remained dedicated to the state’s unity.
  • Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal: The last imam of the Second Saudi State, he witnessed the state’s fall but laid the foundation for its resurgence.
  • King Abdulaziz: Founder of modern Saudi Arabia, he unified the nation and established its contemporary identity.
