Reel Palestine will be celebrating its 10th edition at Cinema Akil starting on January 26th

A Cinematic Odyssey Celebrating Palestinian Resilience and Diversity

As the curtain rises on the 10th edition of Reel Palestine, Cinema Akil, the distinguished independent cinema in the GCC, is set to host an extraordinary celebration of Palestinian stories. From January 26th to February 4th, Cinema Akil will be the epicenter of this annual film festival, a testament to a decade of commitment to the rich panorama of Palestinian narratives through independent and alternative cinema.

A Phoenix-Inspired Visual Journey

Presented by Bayt and supported by Bristol and Advanced Media, Reel Palestine 2024 draws inspiration from the Gaza City shield, symbolizing rebirth and renewal—a poignant reflection of the festival’s commitment and the enduring Palestinian value of steadfastness. This visual identity resonates like the fabled Phoenix, embodying the spirit of a community that rises from the ashes.

The Cinematic Embrace: Solidarity with Gaza

In solidarity with Gaza, this edition offers a compelling film program, spanning 12 feature films and documentaries, along with a short film program across 24 screenings. These films reflect the resilience, struggles, and triumphs of the Palestinian experience, complemented by masterclasses, workshops, and the annual souk.

The Opening Act: “The Teacher” by Farah Nabulsi

The festival program kicks off on January 26th with the UAE debut of “The Teacher,” the latest feature by Farah Nabulsi, an acclaimed Palestinian-British director, Oscar nominee, and BAFTA winner. The film, starring Saleh Bakri, recently gained recognition after screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Red Sea Festival.

Diverse Narratives Unveiled

The festival lineup includes equally compelling films such as “Lyd” by Rami Younis and Sarah Ema Friedland, exploring the past, present, and potential future of a city connecting Palestine to the world. “Tomorrow’s Freedom” by Georgia Scott and Sophia Scott captures the story of imprisoned Palestinian political leader Marwan Barghout. “Bye Bye Tiberias” by Lina Soualem questions the bold choices of Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass.

Beyond Borders: Global Perspectives

Reel Palestine’s 10th edition features films like “Here & Elsewhere” by Jean-Luc Godard and “Slingshot Hip-Hop” by Jacqueline Reem Salloum, documenting the emergence of Palestinian hip-hop. Additionally, Jumana Manna’s “Foragers” transports the audience to the historic land of the Golan Heights, the Galilee, and Jerusalem.

A Deep Dive into Palestinian Experiences

Documentaries like “Three Promises” by Yousef Srouji explore the heart-wrenching choices faced by families during the second intifada. “We No Longer Prefer Mountains” by Inas Halabi unravels the inner politics of the Druze community since 1948, while “Aida Returns” by Carol Mansour offers a poignant journey of loss and rediscovery.

Masterclasses and Workshops: Nurturing Cultural Dialogue

In addition to the film program, Reel Palestine’s 10th-anniversary edition invites cinephiles to partake in a series of masterclasses and workshops. Acclaimed filmmaker Mohanad Yaqubi will lead a thought-provoking session on 3rd Cinema & Trans-Global Solidarity, exploring the intersection of cinema and global movements for justice. Nezar Andary will delve into the intricate relationship between film and propaganda.

The Reel Palestine Souk: A Marketplace of Cultural Richness

The 10th-anniversary edition welcomes back the Reel Palestine Souk, returning as the largest market to date with over 50 small local businesses from the region and Palestine. Homegrown businesses will exhibit Palestinian crafts, books, fashion, spices, food, and more on January 27-28 and February 3-4.

A Cinematic Embrace Beyond Borders

Cinema Akil expressed, “Bringing Palestinian stories to the UAE is a heartfelt journey into the untold narratives of the resilience of the Palestinian people. The love for films in the UAE reflects the profound passion driving our festival. For this 10-year milestone, the lineup is our commitment to sharing the poignant stories of the Palestinian diaspora, offering a cinematic embrace that transcends borders.”

A Decade of Cultural Dialogue

This anniversary edition continues the tradition of Reel Palestine, offering audiences in the UAE a unique opportunity to foster cultural dialogue, engage with powerful narratives, meet directors, and participate in insightful Q&A sessions, masterclasses, and workshops.
