Comedy is subjective, sure — but sometimes, a joke can go terribly south. And in the case of Ram Kapoor, what was meant to be “funny” during a press junket has turned into a full-blown controversy. The actor, known for his warm screen presence and sharp wit, has landed in hot water after comments made during Mistry promotions rubbed many the wrong way.
Ram Kapoor admits to his passing on cheap comments
Ram Kapoor, the beloved man of prime-time TV and OTT screens, is now facing the music — and not the good kind. While promoting his new series Mistry on JioHotstar, the actor made some off-colour remarks that triggered a wave of discomfort among media attendees and team members alike. And now, with headlines firing off left, right and centre, Kapoor has finally broken his silence.
“Yes, I Said It!” — Ram’s Bold Admission
No running, no hiding — Ram straight-up admitted it. “Yes, I said everything I’ve been accused of. Guilty as charged,” he told ETimes. But the actor was quick to offer a layered explanation. “When I’m in a comfort zone, I go full throttle with my bindass self,” he added. According to him, his comments weren’t intended to hurt — but clearly, intent doesn’t always align with impact.
Oblivious or Overboard?
Ram claimed that throughout the day, everyone around him seemed to be laughing, and if he’d sensed any discomfort, he would’ve addressed it instantly. “Why would I make such remarks in a hall packed with media if I thought it was inappropriate?” he asked, pointing out that this was the first time in 25 years anyone’s questioned his character. Still, he acknowledged the need to evolve, adding, “Maybe it’s time I stop being my obnoxious, ‘normal’ self.”
Benched By The Big Leagues?
According to reports, the event where things took a nosedive took place on June 19 in Mumbai. Since then, buzz from inside sources at JioHotstar suggests the platform isn’t taking things lightly. The top brass has allegedly decided to sideline Ram from further promotions. Yikes.
The Offending Comment? Not Funny
Eyewitnesses at the event shared that his tone quickly turned uncomfortable. One specific moment drew heavy criticism — when referring to his packed press schedule, Ram quipped that he felt “gang-raped,” a comment that allegedly came while a female journalist was adjusting his mic. And no — there’s no universe where that joke lands right.
A Lesson, Loud & Clear
While Ram Kapoor’s attempt at edgy humour may have come from a place of comfort, the backlash is a reminder that times — and tolerances — have changed. What was once brushed off as “bindaas” banter is now being called out for what it is: unacceptable.
