Carrefour Takes a Stand for Sustainability: Going Plastic-Free Every Wednesday in July

Commitment to going Plastic Free

The plastic free July initiative by Carrefour, under Majid Al Futtaim, is making waves as they decided to ditch plastic bags every Wednesday. This move is part of their commitment to reducing plastic waste and promoting greener shopping habits among customers.

The Growing Issue of Plastic Pollution

Plastic pollution is a serious problem worldwide, with single-use plastics causing significant harm to our environment. Each year, millions of tons of plastic end up in landfills and oceans, threatening wildlife and ecosystems. Governments and companies alike are now stepping up to address this pressing issue.

Carrefour’s Practical Solution: Plastic-Free July

Starting July 3, Carrefour will stop providing plastic bags every Wednesday. Instead, customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags or opt for Carrefour’s sturdy juco bags, available at a discounted rate of 33% throughout the month. This initiative not only reduces plastic waste but also promotes sustainable shopping practices.

Incentives for Sustainable Choices

To reward customers for choosing eco-friendly options, Carrefour will offer 5 bonus SHARE points to those who bring their own bags or purchase reusable ones. Additionally, shoppers spending over AED40 in the fruit and vegetable section will receive complimentary fruit and vegetable bags. These incentives aim to encourage more environmentally conscious consumer behavior.

A Commitment to Environmental Responsibility

Samar Elmnhrawy, Senior Vice President of Sustainability at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, emphasized Carrefour’s role in reducing plastic consumption. “With over 80,000 customers visiting our stores daily, we have a significant opportunity to make a positive impact on our planet. This Plastic Free July, we are taking meaningful steps towards a more sustainable future.”

Aligning with Global Efforts

Carrefour’s initiative coincides with International Plastic Free Day and supports the UAE’s ban on single-use plastic bags introduced in Dubai in June. By aligning with these global efforts, Carrefour demonstrates its commitment to environmental stewardship and encourages broader sustainability practices.

Partnerships for Recycling Success

In addition to promoting reusable bags, Carrefour has partnered with BEEAH and Sparklo to implement a robust recycling scheme. Together, they have collected over 185 tonnes of recyclables, preventing more than 1,140 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. These partnerships highlight Carrefour’s dedication to a circular economy and reducing its environmental footprint.

Empowering Consumers to Choose Wisely

Through its ‘Choose Better’ program, Carrefour empowers customers to make greener choices. By offering practical alternatives to single-use plastics and promoting recycling initiatives, Carrefour aims to foster a culture of sustainability among its shoppers. These efforts are crucial in driving long-term environmental benefits.

A Greener Future with Carrefour

Carrefour’s Plastic Free July initiative is a significant step towards a more sustainable future. By eliminating plastic bags one day a week and incentivizing reusable options, Carrefour sets a precedent for responsible retail practices. As more consumers embrace these initiatives, they contribute to a cleaner environment and a healthier planet for future generations.

plastic-free: Change for a Better Tomorrow

Carrefour’s commitment to going Plastic Free every Wednesday in July underscores its dedication to environmental responsibility. By encouraging sustainable shopping habits and supporting recycling efforts, Carrefour leads by example in tackling plastic pollution. As we collectively strive for a greener future, initiatives like Plastic Free July play a crucial role in driving positive change.
