UAE Perseid meteor shower 2025: When, where and how to watch

Each summer, the Perseid meteor shower puts on one of the most reliable and brightest displays in the northern hemisphere. In 2025, it runs from mid?July until late August, with its peak on the night of August?12–13. Under optimal conditions, many observers could see up to 75 meteors per hour, though moonlight this year may reduce sightings.

When to aim for the clearest views

Although the meteor shower peaks in mid?August, the near?full moon around that time may wash out fainter streaks. For darker skies and better visibility:

  • Late July (around 24 July) offers earlier but clearer viewing when the moon is less prominent.
  • August?16–26, after the full moon, provides a second chance with fewer meteors but darker skies.

Both windows can offer memorable sightings, especially from remote locations with minimal light pollution.

Top viewing locations across the UAE

Finding a spot away from city lights is key to seeing more meteors. These locations offer prime conditions:

Jebel Jais, Ras Al?Khaimah

At the highest elevation in the UAE, Jebel Jais offers crisp skies and minimal light interference. The Dubai Astronomy Group is hosting a ticketed event that includes a presentation, sky mapping, Q&A, and telescope viewing late into the night.

Al Quaa Milky Way Spot, Abu?Dhabi

Roughly 90 minutes from the city, this quiet stretch is known for its exceptionally dark skies—ideal for viewing both the Milky Way and Perseids.

Al Qudra Desert, Dubai

An accessible stargazing hotspot for Dubai residents. Venturing a bit further from main roads enhances your view as background light fades away.

Hatta, Hajar Mountains

Located more than two hours from Abu Dhabi, Hatta’s elevation and remoteness make it a strong choice for clear, star?filled skies.

What to consider before heading out

  • Let your eyes adjust: Arrive at least 20–30 minutes before peak time. Avoid bright screens or lights and consider using red?tinted flashlights.
  • Dress sensibly: Desert nights can grow chilly after midnight. Bring water, light snacks, insect repellent and a blanket or reclining chair.
  • No special gear needed: Meteors are best seen with the naked eye, across a wide sky. Viewing through binoculars or a telescope narrows your field and can limit what you spot.
  • Moon positioning matters: If the moon is bright, position yourself so it’s blocked by natural or built landscape features to reduce glare.

The Perseids feel special in the UAE

This annual event taps into something deeper than just astronomy. Stargazing in the Emirates connects people to the desert’s natural rhythm — a reminder of the region’s long relationship with the night sky, dating back to the days of desert navigation and early Islamic astronomy.

For families, friends or solo adventurers, this is a rare moment to disconnect from the city’s glow and experience nature in its most awe-inspiring form. Whether you catch a dozen meteors or just a few, the sense of wonder remains the same.

Dubai’s increasing interest in space and science — from school astronomy clubs to national space initiatives — also reflects how events like this stir curiosity across generations.

prepare, pause, and look up

Even with moonlight this year, the Perseid meteor shower is still expected to offer some of the brightest meteors visible from the UAE. But the real experience lies in the stillness: under a vast sky, far from the noise, watching nature unfold overhead.

If you’re planning a stargazing night this August, make sure to pick a dark spot, avoid city lights, and give yourself time to really take it all in.

And if you’re attending the Dubai Astronomy Group’s Jebel Jais gathering, arrive early, bring layers, and soak up the stories shared under the stars.
