Mumtaz and Sharmila Tagore were once the reigning queens of Bollywood, but behind those stunning sarees and silver screen smiles was a cold war that had the gossip mills buzzing.
If you thought catfights were just Gen Z drama, think again! Bollywood’s golden girls had their own share of eyebrow-raising rivalries, and this one between Mumtaz and Sharmila is getting a throwback spotlight, thanks to Mumtaz’s no-filter mode in a brand-new interview.
Mumtaz Shuts Down the Buzz Around Her Rivalry With Sharmila Tagore
In a candid conversation with Vickey Lalwani, Mumtaz rolled her eyes (metaphorically) at the whole “rivalry” narrative. “Rivalry for what? I had nothing to do with Sharmila Tagore. She has among the top actors, and so was I,” she shrugged. She cleared the air on the ‘jealousy’ factor, she shared, “On the contrary, I think I have won more awards than what she had ever won. I got more awards. She and I both were beautiful, so why would I be jealous of her? I was never jealous of her, I don’t know why people think that.”
Apparently, while both were bagging films with superstars like Rajesh Khanna and Shammi Kapoor, Mumtaz was also collecting trophies.
No Phone Calls, No Pretence: Mumtaz Isn’t Into Fake Friendships
When asked if she reached out to Sharmila after the shocking knife attack on her son, Saif Ali Khan, earlier this year, Mumtaz kept it blunt. She shared,“No, I didn’t call her. I call nobody. So many people died, I didn’t call anybody. Also, I live in London and travel to Kenya, Uganda, wherever my husband goes. I come to Mumbai only once in 6 months because I was born and brought up here and I love India. I am what I am because of the love I got from Indians.”
Let’s set the record straight, these two weren’t hosting Sunday brunches or giggling over coffee on set. Mumtaz made it crystal clear: “I was never close to her. I was not friendly with her and neither was she. She had her own set of friends and I had mine.” No animosity, just a healthy distance and completely different friend circles.
While Sharmila Tagore is still gracing screens (she recently did a Bengali film), Mumtaz said bye to the limelight decades ago and settled into life with her businessman husband. But clearly, even after all these years, she’s still got the power to stir the pot with a single quote.
