If you’re into stargazing or just want an excuse to step out tonight, a partial lunar eclipse will be visible in Dubai from September 17 to 18. This is your chance to witness a stunning natural phenomenon as the Earth’s shadow partially covers the moon.
Unlike a total eclipse where the moon disappears, this partial eclipse will leave the moon visible, just dimmed. So, it’s still worth heading outdoors for a closer look!
What Is a Lunar Eclipse?
A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth comes directly between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the moon. Since this is a partial lunar eclipse, only part of the moon will be shadowed, creating a unique view that’s perfect for photos or even just watching from your balcony.
In Dubai, the eclipse will be visible late in the evening, and the best views will be in areas with low light pollution—so maybe head out into the desert or any quiet spot with a good view of the night sky.
The Harvest Moon Is Coming Too!
If you’re excited about the lunar eclipse, there’s more! A few days after the eclipse, we’ll get the full Harvest Moon on September 22. This is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. In the past, farmers used its extra light to harvest crops late into the night, and that’s how it got its name.
Even if you miss the eclipse, the Harvest Moon will be a brilliant sight. You can look for it in the eastern sky around sunset.
Want to See More? Keep an Eye Out for Comet ATLAS
If the eclipse and Harvest Moon aren’t enough for you, September might bring another surprise—the comet ATLAS (C/2023 A3). This comet could become the brightest of the year, visible around September 27. However, astronomers aren’t sure yet if it will be bright enough to see or if it might disintegrate before it gets close.
If visible, ATLAS will leave a bright trail across the sky, making it another exciting celestial event to look forward to.
Where to Watch the Lunar Eclipse in Dubai
For the best views of the lunar eclipse, avoid bright city lights. The desert, open parks, or any elevated area would be ideal. If you want a more guided experience, the University of Dubai is hosting a ticketed event where you can enjoy telescope views and expert insights. Tickets start at AED 80, and students get discounts, so it’s a fun, educational way to enjoy the night.
