Yash Johar’s influence on Bollywood is immeasurable, and his legacy lives on through the films he created and the values he instilled in his family. On June 26, 2004, Bollywood was taken aback as they bid farewell to the legendary filmmaker Yash Johar, the man responsible for setting our filmy love expectations sky-high. At 74, Yash Johar succumbed to a chest infection while battling cancer. Fast forward 20 years, and his son, the ever-stylish Karan Johar, took to social media to honor his dad with a heartfelt tribute.
Karan johar’s Heartfelt Tribute
Karan Johar poured his heart out in an emotional post, sharing some treasured archival photos of his father. “I can’t believe it’s been 20 years… My biggest fear was losing a parent… August 2nd, 2003 my father told me he had a malignant tumor… my worst nightmare was staring at me and yet it was my duty as his child to stay positive and keep the faith… but the worst thing about instincts is that… they never lie…” he began, baring his soul.
Continuing his poignant reflection, KJo added, “He left us 10 months after …. We lost him … but we gained every inch of his mammoth goodwill…. I was so proud to be the son of the most solid, soulful and selfless man… he put his relationships above everything else… and has left a legacy of love that my mother and I still live by ….”
Ending on a touching note, Karan expressed his wish for his father to know his grandchildren, Yash and Roohi. “I wish he knew our children … but I do know he’s watching over them and us….all the time … Love you Papa…”

For those who need a refresher, Yash Johar was the powerhouse behind Dharma Productions. Starting his career as a publicist and still photographer in the early 1950s, he went on to produce blockbusters that are now Bollywood classics. From Dostana and Agneepath to Duplicate, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Kal Ho Naa Ho, Yash Johar’s legacy is a treasure trove of cinematic gems.
