Karan Johar Calls Out Pricey Popcorn: Are Sky-High Snack Costs Keeping Families Away from Theatres?

Karan Johar, the man who gave us dreamy romances, unforgettable family dramas, and set sky-high standards for cinematic entertainment, is now turning his attention to a new issue: the wallet-breaking cost of snacks in theatres. While his films have made us crave larger-than-life stories, it looks like families are craving something simpler – affordable popcorn! In an interview, KJo didn’t mince words as he tackled one of the biggest problems faced by cinema-goers. Well, it’s the snack prices that are driving families to restaurants instead of theatres. Yep, the director behind Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham just dropped the popcorn bomb.

Karan johar breaks silence on expensive popcorn prices

Karan opened up about the financial crunch many families feel when they head to the movies. According to him, “They went to 100 homes, and out of those 100 homes, 90 said they would watch only two films a year (in theatres). This is of an income group that is a massive part of our audience base. They can’t afford it. They may come out on Diwali, or if they hear about a film like Stree 2.”

Families Choosing Dinner Over Drama

The Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani director got real about why families are opting for restaurants instead of movie nights. Imagine sitting in a theatre, your kid asks for caramel popcorn, and suddenly you’re calculating how much you’ll need to fork out. Karan Johar said it best: “Family members said that they don’t like to go to cinema halls because when kids say that they want popcorn or something to eat, they feel bad denying them. So they would rather go to a restaurant, where they’re not paying for the ticket; they’re paying only for the food. They said, ‘Our child will point and say he wants caramel popcorn, but we can’t afford it.’ Because the average cost for a family of four can be ?10,000. And maybe those ?10,000 are not in their economic planning at all.”

With the rise of OTT platforms, moviegoers have gotten a bit too comfy in their PJs, watching films from their couches. The competition between OTT platforms and cinema halls is fiercer than ever. With streaming services offering instant access to the latest flicks, theatres need to rethink their strategy.

Karan Johar’s Upcoming Projects

Of course, when it comes to cinema, Karan Johar is practically royalty. He’s the mastermind behind iconic films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and Kal Ho Naa Ho. So, when he speaks, Bollywood listens. Apart from dropping some real talk on snack inflation, KJo’s got a ton of exciting projects up his sleeve, including Devara: Part 1 and Jigra (co-produced with Alia Bhatt’s Eternal Sunshine Productions).

In a world where Karan Johar has raised our expectations in both love stories and family entertainment, it’s clear he’s not about to let overpriced snacks take the shine off cinema. But whether theatres can rise to the challenge remains to be seen. Your move, multiplexes!
