WATCH: Jaya Bachchan Rebukes Parliament for Addressing Her by Husband’s Name, Emphasizes Her Identity

When it comes to Indian cinema, few names resonate as powerfully as Jaya Bachchan. A veteran actress with a career spanning decades, she’s known for her formidable talent and equally formidable personality. Fearless and unapologetically outspoken, Jaya has never shied away from standing tall and speaking her mind, even when it lands her in hot water.

In a fiery exchange on Monday, August 29, our fierce queen of cinema turned politician made headlines yet again. During a Rajya Sabha session, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh made the mistake of addressing her as ‘Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan,’ and let’s just say, Jaya was not having it.

“Just Call Me Jaya Bachchan” – Jaya Ji

A video capturing the moment has since gone viral, showcasing Jaya’s sharp retort: “Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata.” Translation? “Just calling me Jaya Bachchan would have been enough.” Her stance was clear and her tone unwavering.

When informed that her official documents carry her name as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan,’ the iconic Sholay actress didn’t miss a beat. She delivered a searing critique of this outdated practice, reminding everyone that her identity is independent of her legendary husband. “Ye jo hain kuch naya tarika hain ki mahilaayen apne pati ke naam se jaani jaye. Unka koi astitva nahi. Unki koi upalabdh hi nahi hain, apne mein aur astitva nahi hain? Ye jo naya shuru hua hain, I just…” (This new method of identifying women by their husband’s names as if they have no identity or achievements of their own… I just…) Social media lit up with applause for Jaya’s stand.

Jaya Bachchan isn’t just a Bollywood icon; she’s a force of nature. From her unforgettable roles in classics like Sholay and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, to her dynamic presence in the political arena, Jaya’s legacy is one of relentless strength and unapologetic authenticity. Her recent parliamentary showdown is just another example of why she continues to be a beacon of empowerment and inspiration.
