Meta launches Teen Accounts on Instagram in the UAE

As social media continues to play a significant role in young people’s lives, the launch of Teen Accounts on Instagram in the UAE offers timely support for families concerned about online safety. With millions of teens across the world already enrolled, Meta’s new feature introduces automatic privacy and well-being controls for all users under the age of 16.

The move supports regional efforts to build safer digital spaces, especially for young audiences in the UAE, where innovation goes hand in hand with responsible tech use.

What Instagram Teen Accounts offer

Private by default for under-16s

Any new Instagram account created by someone under 16 in the UAE is now automatically set to private. This means only approved followers can view the teen’s posts, stories, and activity. Previously, this had to be manually selected. Existing accounts of teens will also receive notifications encouraging them to switch to private mode.

Messaging restrictions

Teen accounts come with built-in messaging limits. Under this setting, unknown users—particularly adults who are not mutual followers—cannot message teens. The platform also blocks message requests and restricts tagging or mentioning of teen accounts by strangers.

Content filtering and safety tools

Instagram Teen Accounts enable the most restrictive content settings across the app’s Explore, Reels, and Search features. Age-inappropriate content is automatically filtered out, helping protect teens from sensitive material. Instagram’s “Hidden Words” tool is also activated by default, filtering offensive words and emojis in comments and message requests.

Focus on digital well-being

Beyond privacy, Meta has introduced time management tools aimed at promoting healthier digital habits. Teen users will receive gentle reminders after they’ve been active on the platform for more than an hour. Notifications are also automatically silenced between 10 PM and 7 AM to encourage better sleep habits.

Parents in the UAE can further support their teens through Instagram’s Family Centre, where supervision features allow them to monitor usage patterns and message metadata without breaching privacy. This gives families a collaborative way to manage screen time and digital behavior.

In a country like the UAE, where both locals and expatriates embrace cutting-edge technology and digital platforms, this initiative is a step in the right direction. As schools embrace digital learning and teens spend more time online, educators and parents welcome tools that promote safe social media experiences.

The Instagram Teen Accounts launch also reinforces the UAE’s national agenda for digital safety, particularly when it comes to protecting vulnerable age groups. By giving teenagers a safer space to connect and express themselves, the feature also fosters more responsible content sharing from a young age.

How to enable or review these features

For parents and guardians in Dubai and across the UAE, it’s advisable to:

  • Review your teen’s Instagram privacy settings to ensure their account is set to private
  • Enable supervision tools through Instagram’s Family Centre
  • Encourage teens to make use of screen time alerts and nighttime notification settings
  • Discuss online safety and the importance of responsible social media use

These steps create a collaborative digital environment where teens can explore social media safely while maintaining transparency with their families.

A safer digital future for UAE teens

The rollout of Instagram Teen Accounts in the UAE reflects a growing shift toward digital responsibility and child protection. With features designed to prioritise privacy, content safety, and well-being, the initiative marks a meaningful advancement in how social media platforms engage with younger audiences.

As Dubai continues to lead in innovation while upholding family values, this development fits naturally into the evolving digital culture of the country—offering peace of mind to parents and a more secure online experience for the next generation.
