Instagram introduces safe accounts for teens

Instagram Launches Teen Accounts to Enhance Online Safety for Teens

Instagram is rolling out a new feature called “Teen Accounts,” designed to provide young users with more protection while using the platform. This update comes in response to growing concerns about the safety of teenagers online and aims to create a safer, healthier social media experience.

Why Instagram Is Changing

Social media platforms, including Instagram, have faced criticism over the years for not doing enough to protect younger users. From unwanted messages to exposure to harmful content, teens often encounter risks that can impact their mental well-being. Recognizing these concerns, Instagram is taking steps to limit these risks and promote healthier app usage for young people.

New Features for Teen Safety

Instagram’s Teen Accounts come with built-in safety measures to help create a more secure environment. Here’s what’s new:

Accounts Are Private by Default

For users under 18, Instagram accounts will now automatically be set to private. This means only approved followers can see their content, helping to reduce unwanted interactions.

Stricter Messaging Rules

Messaging is now restricted to people teens are already connected with. Strangers can no longer message them out of the blue, cutting down on the risk of unsolicited contact.

Better Content Filters

To prevent exposure to sensitive or inappropriate content, Instagram will use stricter filters for teens. This includes reducing the visibility of violent or adult-themed posts.

Limiting Tags and Mentions

Another way Instagram is improving safety is by limiting who can tag or mention teen users in posts, which can help teens avoid being drawn into conversations they don’t want to be part of.

Encouraging Healthy Usage

Instagram is also introducing reminders for users to take breaks. After 60 minutes of usage, teens will receive a notification to help them manage their screen time. Additionally, the app will automatically switch to ‘Sleep Mode’ between 10 PM and 7 AM to encourage offline time.

Parental Supervision

One of the most important changes is that Instagram is allowing parents to have more control. For teens under 16, any attempt to make these settings less restrictive will need parental approval. Parents will also have access to a supervision tool that lets them keep an eye on their child’s Instagram activity without directly accessing private messages.

Where and When Is It Rolling Out?

Instagram plans to roll out these new Teen Accounts in phases, starting with the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. The feature is expected to arrive in other regions, including the European Union, later this year. By January, the company aims for a global rollout, which means teens everywhere will have access to these enhanced safety features.

A Step Towards Safer Social Media

Instagram’s Teen Accounts are a big step in making social media safer for younger users. With stricter privacy settings, better controls on communication, and new tools to encourage healthy use, Instagram is setting a new standard for protecting teenagers online. As these changes roll out globally, they will likely have a significant impact on how teens interact with social media, offering parents peace of mind and young users a safer online experience.
