UAE’s Harees Enters UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List

Exploring the Culinary Legacy and Cultural Significance of the UAE's Beloved Dish

In a momentous cultural stride, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) proudly announces the inclusion of the beloved UAE traditional dish, Harees, in the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This hearty porridge-like dish has secured its place among the cherished cultural practices and traditions recognized by the global community.

A Gem Deeply Rooted in Tradition

Harees, a culinary gem deeply embedded in the UAE’s cultural tapestry, holds a special place in the hearts of locals. Traditionally savored during vital family gatherings, including weddings, and prominent national and religious occasions, the dish takes center stage, especially during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Crafting Culinary Excellence

The meticulous process of crafting Harees involves cooking wheat in subtly salted water for several hours. Following this, tender meat—commonly lamb or chicken—is added, and the concoction simmers for a minimum of four hours. The final presentation includes a generous spooning of local ghee, enhancing the dish’s rich flavor and cultural significance.
