In times when Bollywood is struggling to crack the box office code with films turning into surprise blockbusters or shocking duds overnight, nobody really knows which movie’s fate will shine and which will sink. Filmmaker Karan Johar opens up on his strong and actual opinions.
Karan Johar Drops A Reality Check
At the press conference of the fantasy epic Mirai – Super Yodha Tour in Mumbai, Karan Johar was joined by the film’s hero Teja Sajja, director Karthik Gattamneni, and producer Vishwa Prasad. While fans were buzzing about the 12th September 2025 release, Karan’s words on Bollywood’s unpredictable fate grabbed all the spotlight.
When asked if fresh faces are stealing the thunder from seasoned stars, Karan kept it real.“Sometimes big-star movies work wonders, sometimes fresh faces lead the way. But there’s no formula. All actors today are aligned with the film’s vision; they’ve become more understanding of the changing landscape. You cannot put it all in one box,” he said. According to him, whether you’ve got Shah Rukh levels of stardom or you’re a newbie straight out of drama school, the box office has become a gamble of vision, content, and audience mood swings.
KJo didn’t hold back on name-dropping classics either. “There will be many movies with newcomers that are musicals — but not all of them will be Saiyaara. Just because you’re doing animation doesn’t mean it will be Narasimha. That’s the reality. Box office has no rules. You create your story, tell it differently, and then it’s up to the audience. They decide what deserves their love — and their money,” he pointed out. Translation: no genre, no trend, no star guarantees a hit. It’s all about whether the audience buys into your story — or leaves you on ‘seen’.
Karan made it clear that today’s viewers aren’t blindly worshipping stars anymore; they’re rewarding originality, risks, and emotions that hit home. That’s why small films are blowing up big, and sometimes mega-star projects are tanking harder than anyone expected. “If your vision is big, even young actors can carry it through. But it doesn’t guarantee success. The same goes for superstars. There is no fixed equation anymore,” he declared.
What’s next for Dharma?
Besides Mirai, which is being hailed as a genre-defining fantasy saga, KJo’s plate is brimming with films like Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, Chand Mera Dil, and the quirky romance Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri. From commercial entertainers to experimental stories, Karan is clearly ready to play all sides of the cinema coin.
Karan’s blunt yet refreshing take is a reminder for Bollywood dreamers: stop chasing the formula, because there isn’t one. The box office is basically Tinder – swipe right if the vibe clicks, swipe left if it doesn’t.
