Noor Dubai Foundation and AKCAF Association have launched a Ramadan campaign in Dubai to provide free eye screenings, glasses, medication, and surgeries for those in need. The initiative supports UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s Year of Community initiative and aims to improve eye health in the local community.
Free Eye Care for Hundreds of Residents
The campaign has already helped around 700 people, offering them free eye screenings. About 200 individuals with vision issues have also received free reading glasses.
Dr. Manal Taryam, Board Member and CEO at Noor Dubai Foundation highlighted the campaign’s importance in improving long-term eye health:
“This programme will provide free eye health services, including vision screenings and referrals to specialised hospitals when necessary. It will also cover the cost of medication, reading glasses, and surgeries, ensuring that everyone has access to quality eye care.”
Support from Volunteers and the Community
The initiative has received strong support from volunteers and local organizations. 227 volunteers have contributed to organizing and delivering eye care services.
Shamsa Al Muhairi, one of the volunteers, shared her experience:
“It’s inspiring to see how the community has come together during Ramadan to support this initiative. Being part of this campaign has shown me the true spirit of unity.”
The campaign also included the distribution of 6,700 free iftar meals, organised by AKCAF Association, to promote community spirit during the holy month.
Expanding Eye Care Beyond the UAE
This initiative marks the first project under a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Noor Dubai Foundation and the AKCAF Association. The partnership will extend beyond the UAE to provide eye care to underserved communities globally.
Paul T Joseph, President of AKCAF Association, expressed his appreciation for the partnership:
“This collaboration with Noor Dubai Foundation represents a significant step toward improving community welfare. Together, we aim to provide free eye screenings, reading glasses, and surgeries to those in need, not only in the UAE but also beyond.”
Noor Dubai Foundation, a non-governmental organisation established by the Dubai government, focuses on eradicating preventable blindness. Its work supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 5, 8, and 17, which promote health, gender equality, economic growth, and global partnerships.
A Lasting Impact on the Community
The Ramadan campaign reflects the Noor Dubai Foundation’s broader mission to improve eye health and ensure accessible care for all. The foundation’s goal is to create long-term health benefits by providing consistent support and treatment to those with vision impairments.
Dr. Taryam emphasized the foundation’s commitment:
“We are working towards a future where everyone has the right to sight. This partnership is a step toward achieving that vision.”
The initiative’s success highlights the power of community collaboration and the importance of accessible healthcare. Noor Dubai Foundation and AKCAF Association are expected to continue working together to expand these services and reach more individuals in need.
