Dubai has always been a city that embraces futuristic solutions, and the latest reveal from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) keeps up with that reputation. Introducing the Floc Duo Rail, an electric pod-based transport system, set to transform how people get around the city. Unveiled at the recent GITEX Global Conference 2024, these self-driving pods are not just high-tech but also sustainable, cost-effective, and designed to ease traffic congestion on Dubai’s busy roads.
What is the Floc Duo Rail?
The Floc Duo Rail is a state-of-the-art transport solution, developed in collaboration with the UK-based Urban.MASS. These driverless, electric pods can move both above ground and on the surface. Each pod can carry up to 16 passengers and is part of a scalable system that adjusts to passenger demand. This makes it an ideal fit for a city like Dubai, where traffic congestion and carbon emissions are major concerns. The system offers “first and last mile” services, meaning it’s designed to provide door-to-door transit, eliminating the need to find a station.

Why Does It Matter?
As cities worldwide face increasing traffic and pollution, Dubai’s commitment to creating a low-emission, efficient transport system could set a new global standard. The Floc Duo Rail is built to reduce carbon emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional urban transport systems, contributing significantly to Dubai’s Vision 2033 of becoming a sustainable, tech-driven hub.
But it’s not just about being green—this system is designed to be affordable and quick to deploy. Unlike conventional rail systems, it requires minimal infrastructure. With just two tracks and little need for heavy construction, the RTA can expand the system relatively quickly across the city.
Planned Routes and Benefits
The RTA has already outlined three main routes for the Floc Duo Rail system, covering key areas of the city:
- Umm Suqeim – 26 km, 16 stations
- Al Khor – 24 km, 11 stations
- Zabeel – 15 km, 19 stations
Once implemented, these routes will connect residents and tourists to vital parts of Dubai, offering faster and more frequent services across busy districts and suburban areas alike.
This project doesn’t just offer faster travel times; it also promises less road congestion and an overall smoother commuting experience. The system can divide long trains into smaller ones for suburban routes, offering flexibility.
Testing and What’s Next
While the Floc Duo Rail is still in its testing phase, the project has received significant attention and excitement from both the public and experts in the transportation sector. At this stage, there’s no concrete timeline or pricing for rides, as the RTA is still assessing how well the system can function across Dubai’s diverse neighborhoods. However, given the rapid advancements in technology and Dubai’s track record of implementing major projects swiftly, it’s likely that we will see these pods in action sooner rather than later.
A Step Towards the Future
Once operational, Dubai will become the first city in the world to introduce such a pod-based transportation system on a large scale. It’s a significant milestone in the city’s journey towards sustainable, innovative urban living. Not only will it reduce pollution, but it will also provide a convenient, fast, and comfortable mode of transport for residents and visitors alike.
The Floc Duo Rail will revolutionize city commuting. By integrating cutting-edge technology with sustainability, Dubai continues to lead the way in smart city development. This is just the beginning of what looks to be a highly efficient and environmentally friendly future for public transport.
