Dubai Approves New Eight-Lane Bridge to Cut Travel Time to 16 Minutes

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially approved a massive infrastructure project that aims to revolutionize daily commutes in the city. A new eight-lane bridge, costing Dhs786 million, will soon rise over Dubai Creek to improve connectivity between the Dubai Islands and Bur Dubai.

Engineers designed the bridge to support 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, and they expect it to significantly cut down traffic congestion and benefit nearly one million people living and working in the area.

This strategic project forms part of the larger Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, which has been one of the RTA’s most ambitious undertakings to date.

Improving Travel for Residents and Visitors

The bridge, measuring 1,425 meters in length, will have four lanes in each direction. It will provide faster and smoother travel for commuters, especially those traveling between Deira, Bur Dubai, and major developments like the Dubai Islands, Deira Waterfront, Dubai Maritime City, and Port Rashid.

With travel time on the corridor expected to drop from 104 minutes to just 16 minutes, the new bridge will dramatically enhance mobility for both residents and visitors.

More Than Just a Bridge

The new structure isn’t only for vehicles—it will also accommodate pedestrians and cyclists. Workers will construct a dedicated path alongside the bridge, encouraging eco-friendly transport. Additionally, they will install elevators to support people crossing the bridge on foot, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.

This aligns with Dubai’s commitment to developing more pedestrian-friendly and sustainable infrastructure while making daily movement easier for everyone.

Part of a Major Development Plan

The eight-lane bridge is part of the broader Al Shindagha Corridor, which spans 13 kilometers and includes the development of 15 intersections. Due to the sheer scale, the entire project has been divided into five phases.

So far, authorities have already completed and opened several key sections of the corridor—such as the Infinity Bridge and the Falcon Interchange—to the public. These milestones have contributed to easing traffic along the busy route and connecting vital parts of the city more efficiently.

According to the RTA, the overall project will result in an estimated economic saving of Dhs45 billion over the next 20 years, making it a long-term investment in the city’s future.

Supporting Dubai’s Urban Growth

With Dubai’s population and infrastructure rapidly expanding, the need for more efficient transport solutions has become urgent. The newly approved bridge will help accommodate the growing number of residents and vehicles while supporting several mega-developments in the area.

The project also reflects Dubai’s vision of smart urban planning, improved traffic flow, and accessible roads for all—key components of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.

When Will It Be Ready?

While no exact completion date has been shared yet, the RTA has indicated that the project is a priority under its ongoing strategic development goals. Work is already underway in different phases of the Al Shindagha Corridor, and the new bridge is expected to follow suit soon.

Once operational, the bridge will help reduce bottlenecks, save time, and provide a much-needed link between key residential and business zones.

The Bigger Picture

Dubai continues to invest in high-impact infrastructure that keeps pace with its rapid urban development. This new eight-lane bridge is not just another road project—it’s a critical step toward ensuring a more connected, sustainable, and commuter-friendly city.
