Oman Government Implements Ban on E-Cigarettes and Hookahs, Levies Fines Up To OMR 2,000

Prioritizing Public Health and Safety

In a move aimed at protecting public health, the Sultanate of Oman has put its foot down on the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and hookahs. This decision comes as the government addresses concerns about the potential health risks associated with these products.

What’s the Ban About?

The ban, outlined in Resolution No. 756 of 2023, prohibits the sale and trade of e-cigarettes, electronic hookahs, and all related accessories. This means you won’t find these items on the market anymore.

Strict Penalties for Violations

Breaking the ban could lead to hefty fines. If caught, individuals may face fines of up to OMR 2,000. Repeat offenders could see their fines doubled. Moreover, those who persist in violating the ban may be slapped with daily administrative fines of 50 OMR, with a maximum cap of 2,000 OMR. Confiscated items will be disposed of according to established procedures.

When Does It Take Effect?

The ban will kick in shortly after its publication in the Official Gazette. This shows that the government is serious about taking action to safeguard public health and promote safer consumption habits.

Following a Regional Trend

Oman isn’t alone in its efforts to regulate e-cigarettes and hookahs. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) also took steps to control the use of these products back in 2022. This regional approach underscores a broader commitment to addressing health concerns surrounding these items.

Promoting Healthier Lifestyles

By implementing these regulations, Oman aims to reduce the health risks associated with e-cigarettes and hookahs and encourage healthier habits among its citizens. This proactive stance reflects the government’s dedication to public well-being.
