Sheikh Mohammed Launches Pedestrian-Friendly ‘Dubai Walk’

Transforming Dubai into a pedestrian paradise with sustainable mobility

Dubai is taking a massive leap toward sustainability and connectivity with the unveiling of the Dubai Walk initiative by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This transformative project aims to turn Dubai into one of the world’s most pedestrian-friendly cities, enhancing mobility and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

Revamping Urban Mobility with ‘Dubai Walk’

Dubai Walk is designed to revolutionize mobility with a 6,500-kilometer network of walkways connecting the city’s most iconic locations. This project aims to make walking and cycling accessible, safe, and enjoyable for all. By 2040, Dubai plans to increase pedestrian mobility rates from 13% to 25%, with innovative features that align with the emirate’s focus on sustainability and urban development.

Key Features of the Dubai Walk

Seamless Connectivity Across the City

The plan includes 3,300 km of new walkways and upgrades to 2,300 km of existing pathways, along with 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses. Iconic areas like Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and historical neighborhoods will be interconnected, allowing easy access for everyone.

Green and Smart Infrastructure

Dubai Walk focuses on sustainability with shaded areas, energy-efficient lighting, and cooling systems to enhance comfort. The integration of smart navigation systems will guide pedestrians while ensuring safety with clearly marked pathways.

Community and Cultural Integration

The pathways will feature shaded rest stops, art installations, and greenery to enrich the walking experience. Each route will reflect the cultural identity of its surrounding area, making Dubai Walk not just a mode of transport but a celebration of community spirit.

Aligning with Dubai’s Vision

Dubai Walk supports the 20-Minute City initiative, enabling residents to access services within 20 minutes on foot or by bicycle. The project supports the Dubai 2040 Plan and Quality of Life Strategy, cementing Dubai’s forward-thinking status.

Pilot Phase and Future Developments

The project will kick off with a pilot phase from 2025 to 2027, targeting areas with the highest pedestrian traffic. The project will transform Dubai into a hub for sustainable and people-centric mobility by 2040.

Sheikh Mohammed emphasized Dubai Walk’s commitment to health, sustainability, and community well-being. This project will significantly reduce car dependency, lower emissions, and create vibrant public spaces for recreation and leisure.
