Dubai unveils the Metro Blue Line route map

RTA reveals the full Dubai Metro Blue Line route, set to open in 2029 with 14 stations and capacity for over 320,000 passengers daily.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has just dropped a huge piece of news for everyone who lives and works here. The official route map for the much-anticipated Dubai Metro Blue Line has been unveiled, giving us a clear look at how the city’s next major transit artery will cut through some of the busiest and fastest-growing communities.

Set to open its doors in 2029—perfectly timed for the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro—this isn’t just another line; it’s a massive, strategic move to future-proof the city’s infrastructure. If you’ve been living in newer areas like Silicon Oasis or International City and dreading the rush hour traffic on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, this Blue Line is the answer you’ve been waiting for.

In Dubai, we’re used to ‘new and big’ headlines, but the metro expansion is different. It’s a foundational piece of the city’s long-term master plan, specifically the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. The current Red and Green Lines are the backbone, but as new communities sprout up—especially in the east and the growing areas near the Creek—the pressure on the roads becomes real. That’s where the Blue Line steps in.

The RTA’s new line will cover a massive 30 kilometres, splitting the distance almost equally between elevated and underground tracks (14.5km above ground, 15.5km below). This underground portion is crucial, allowing the line to weave seamlessly through denser urban zones without disrupting existing city life.

Once complete, the line will feature 14 stations, strategically linking key residential, commercial, and academic hubs. The goal is straightforward: to reduce the dependence on private cars and give residents a fast, reliable, and air-conditioned way to move around the emirate.

The Route: Connecting the Corners of the City

Corners of the City

The Blue Line is cleverly designed as two main routes that meet at one crucial interchange, ensuring maximum integration with the existing network.

Route 1: The Eastern Corridor (21 km)

This longer route starts at the Creek Interchange Station on the Green Line (in Al Jaddaf) and serves some of Dubai’s newer, large-scale developments and educational clusters.

  • Key Communities Served: Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, International City (1, 2, and 3), Dubai Silicon Oasis, and Academic City.
  • The World’s Tallest Station: This route is where we’ll see the iconic Emaar Properties Station (in Dubai Creek Harbour). At a stunning 74 metres high, it’s set to become the world’s tallest metro station, designed by the same architectural firm that brought us the Burj Khalifa. This is a classic Dubai move—building a landmark out of vital transport infrastructure.
  • A Creek Crossing: For the first time, the Dubai Metro will cross the historic Dubai Creek via a dedicated 1,300-metre bridge, linking the city’s new and old sides more directly than ever before.

Route 2: The Residential Link (9 km)

This shorter, highly strategic route begins at the Centrepoint Interchange Station on the Red Line (in Al Rashidiya).

  • Key Communities Served: Mirdif, Al Warqa, and connecting into the International City 1 Interchange Station.
  • Mirdif and Al Warqa Relief: Residents of Mirdif and Al Warqa—long-time communities relying heavily on cars—will finally get a direct, fast connection into the main metro network, bypassing the often-clogged main roads.

Three Essential Interchange Stations

The Blue Line’s success hinges on its connectivity:

  • Creek Station: Connecting to the existing Green Line.
  • Centrepoint Station: Connecting to the existing Red Line.
  • International City 1: A major, massive new underground hub (covering 44,000 square metres) where the two Blue Line routes will merge and connect.

The Local Impact: Easing the Daily Grind

For anyone who does the daily school run or the office commute, the Blue Line is more than just tracks; it’s about time saved and stress relieved. The RTA estimates this new line will be able to handle over 320,000 passengers daily by 2040. This massive capacity is what will truly take the pressure off major highways.

Property and Planning Ahead

Any resident or investor here knows that where the metro goes, property demand follows. The expansion is already having an impact on areas like Academic City, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Silicon Oasis. Property experts are already predicting that land and property values in the immediate vicinity of these 14 new stations could appreciate significantly. For renters and homeowners, living near a Blue Line station will soon mean a massive upgrade in lifestyle, directly supporting the Dubai 2040 goal of having 80% of daily services accessible within a 20-minute journey.

A Nod to Sustainability

The project also aligns perfectly with Dubai’s push for greener transport. By encouraging hundreds of thousands of daily commuters to switch from private vehicles to the metro, the city is making a massive leap towards reducing road congestion and cutting carbon emissions. They are even aiming for the Blue Line to be Dubai’s first metro line to achieve a platinum green building certification, setting a high bar for sustainable infrastructure worldwide.

What to Know Until 2029?

While the 2029 launch seems far off, the early route clarity is a strategic move, allowing developers and residents to plan their next steps. Until the Blue Line is operational, the trusted Red and Green Lines continue to operate on their regular timings:

DayStart TimeEnd Time
Monday to Thursday5:00 AMMidnight
Friday5:00 AM1:00 AM (the next day)
Saturday5:00 AMMidnight
Sunday8:00 AMMidnight

These timings apply across the Red and Green Lines, ensuring you can still reliably get to work, the malls, or your favourite Friday brunch spot.

The Dubai Metro Blue Line is shaping up to be a project that truly connects the dots between Dubai’s established hubs and its next generation of communities. It’s an investment in the city’s future—a massive, sparkling blue connection that will change how we all move, live, and commute.
